Our D was fine, our breakouts might be the worst in the league and idk if it’s Babcock or DJ Smith, but something needs to change. Structurally, we were better in the 2016-17 season than we were last year and have been in this game.

We'll be fine, guys. This team just needs some time to gel

None of the lines from last season are the same heck even the duos are different

Last season:

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Marleau-Kadari-Marner
jvr-bozo-brown
johnsson-xxx-kappy (for last few games)

This season:

Marleau-Matthews-Ennis
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Leivo-Kadri-Brown
johnsson-lindholm-kappy

completely different line make up;

lines need to find some sort of chemistry...... Ennis is a waste as a top6 forward; they gotta move kappy there

Ennis replaces Nylander.
Give me a break.

Got the win, but we still have work to do. Outworked all game, and werent very good either.
Also Hainsey should be demoted.

Tough game for me to evaluate because I think Babcock simply looked like he didn't prepare his team well at all for this game. I know it's early on but it really looked like a coaching/systems issue.

If you were judging off of this one game, Babs got severely outcoached....but I preface by saying that's not how hockey works in the context of a long year.

All the D looked underwhelming, save perhaps Dermott.

Hainsey was by far, the worst player on both sides of the ice.

I thought Benn had a hell of a game for the Habs, and Petry was very solid as well.

I thought Hyman was our worst forward all night. I seriously don't know if he's blowing the zone early on purpose, or if it's a systems thing, but every stretch pass to him tonight was a turnover waiting to happen. To me, that's worst than being invisible (as Ennis was tonight, for instance).

Basically, tough game to evaluate. Matthews, Tavares skill took over tonight. I thought Marner was pretty good as well and looked creative trying to generate things when he did get opportunities, he just didn't get the puck enough to do much tonight.

Good list. Thought dermott finished the game really well too. I think the leafs will have the best third pairing in the NHL if dermott and Oz keep playing there
Dermott too, for sure. We might need one of them to step up, Hainsey looks ready for third pairing, PK specialist, minutes.

The Leafs really need to move away from the stretch pass.

This team has so much skill. The forwards need to come down lower and move the puck out as a unit. Too many times we handed the puck back to the Habs.

Why not try Leivo on that line. Big body, great shot.

Nylander is a really important player for this team.
Our speed thru the neutral zone and ability to create off the rush drastically goes down without him.
I know hes not a perfect player but I hope people start to appreciate some of the things he does for this team and even Auston Matthews.
Matthews great 2 goal game but was very quiet 5 v 5 and his wingers didn't create much for him.

Ya it was tough to watch. Sometimes old guys start slow so I'm not going to be making any judgement for at least a half dozen games.

I think we will see Zaitsev moved back up, though if Hainsey really falters could even see:

Rielly-Z
Gardiner-Dermott
Hainsey-Oz

His wingers are a guy who got bought out in the summer and a way past his prime Patty Marleau.

Exactly. I almost wish they didn't win to teach them a lesson.

My grades for the game:

A+: Andersen
A: Matthews (for shooting prowess only)
B: Reilly, Zaitsev, Kadri, Lindholm, Tavares, Dermott
C: Hyman, Kappenen, Marner, Marleau
D: Gardiner (brain farts didn't cost us), O-Dog
F: Hainsey (Time to retire)
I (invisible): Johnsson ,Brown, Leivo, Ennis, Nylander

O-dogg looked great to me. Ditto Leivo. The others I agree with.
