When did HF become so obsessed with ESP? Give me a guy who can make my PP #1 in the league any day.
Right around the time when Oiler fans decided to tell the world that their legendary leader was breaking ESP records. I think there were 2 or 3 threads up on the subject within a matter of a day or 2. They sure do love to make things known.

It's too bad Babcock refuses to play him on the Marner PP unit... He would probably have 10+ more goals on the year if he played where Kadri does.

Why bother? The Leafs powerplay is one of the best in the league because the Marner group is so deadly. No sense in changing that. Sure, it would be nice if Matthews could get it going, but not at the expense of everyone else.

That isn't to say it wouldn't be fun to watch of course. The way Marner moves the puck around creates a lot of confusion for the defenders, and Matthews is such a cerebral player that he could thrive on finding the openings when the defense gets crossed up.

I don't see him sustaining the 20% shooting he's racked up this year 5v5.
Eh. He had a pretty average shooting % last year and hit 40 goals as a rookie. His high danger scoring chances and shots will get back to where they were once he is back to 100%. He'll also get stronger, faster, adapt to the league even more, and get the ice time other super star franchise players get in the next couple of years, so we should see him improve even more in those departments with that considered.

Auston Matthews can thank Toronto media and fanbase for how much people will hate him. He can also thank them for the size of his second contract and endorsement money rolling in.

Defensively: Matthews > McDavid for sure. Also, in Goals: Matthews is = McDavid;
Points: Mcdavid > Matthews

I'm not saying Matthews is better than McDavid, but, this shows how close they are, [mod] ...
Yeah we get that McDavid gets 100 points in a season, and, Matthews will get ~85 Points a season, but, there is more to hockey than POINTS ...

Matthews should be in competetion for Selke Trophy if he was not injured, he is one of the games best 2 WAY Players. He's as good as Bergeron defensively. AND NOW .. cue oilers fans who will say
" BUT BUT BUT ... MCDAVID IS GOD .... He is better than MATTHEWS DEFENSIVELY!!!!"
No he's not. Matthews is better than McDavid defensively.

There is a reason why Leafs are top 5 in the NHL ... A lot of it has to do with Auston Matthews Selke-Level defensive play along side his goal scoring ability.

Playoffs Matthews: 4 Goals and 1 assist in 6 Games
Playoffs McDavid: 5 Goals and 4 assists in 13 Games

They are very close in terms of overall skill.

Game 7 in a playoff GAME.

Both teams playing tight defensively; none of them want to make a mistake that will give another team the edge .... STATISTICALLY there are less PP opportunities in the Playoffs than the Regular Season, the reason being? Well go figure sherlock.

Have fun in the playoffs relying on a power play to get you the win. What if the powerplay never comes?

And DO YOU KNOW WHAT is guaranteed??? 60 MINTUES OF 5V5!

Now with that being said; who do you want in that game 7?? Your PP Specialist or your 5v5 Producer?

Yeah, I mean, he's 20 years old and he hasn't hit PPG yet? Bust. The Leafs should trade him for picks while they can still get anything for him.
Turning 21 in 5 months, and hasn't hit PPG? Doesn't sound very generational to me but idk

Oilers will take him. Mind you it's Chia trading him here so you would probably get McDavid and our next two first round picks (#1 lottery picks obviously - it's been a couple lotteries since we won so we are due here)....

:p Grats to the kid. He's amazing.

I personally could give a rat's posterior what other fans think of Matthews or the Leafs. I'm very much looking forward to the next 10-15 years of fans being bent out of shape because the Leafs will be near the top of the league and am also looking forward to watching Leaf Nation pushing their success down the throats of the hordes who piled on for years.

You deserve every bit of it HFBoards.

Now do this for the other 19 players that are closer to McDavid than Matthews.

I guess he isn't good enough to get first line minutes on the PP. Leafs are 3rd best in the PP. Matthews is just going to bide his time in order to find break into that unit:sarcasm:. Too often he's ready to jump onto the PP, but a goal in scored already, and then he's forced to play 5 on 5.
Average of 2:07 PP/game.

0:11 per game less than the Leafs leader, JVR...

But can he score on PP?:sarcasm:

he did last year when he got 1st unit pp time.
much harder to do it getting the last 40-45 seconds of a powerplay and you dont get to be on the ice with jvr/marner/rielly

if babs rolled out Kadri-Matthews-Nylander-Marner-Rielly, they would all have 30+ppp
but he wont. winning is more important than individual stats, and the leafs have depth that most dont
