I will remember Matt Read as the Robin to Couturier's Batman.

Believe he had a knee or ankle Injury that robbed him of his speed. Was never able to get back to playing at the pace that put him a half step in front of everyone else.

Yeah, he got into the league pretty much at his peak too, so it makes sense that his progression was mostly downwards.

Toronto signed him to an AHL deal. Article says the Maple Leafs have 49 NHL contracts right now, and theorizes they may just be doing that temporarily until they trade or release an NHL contract to make space for him for depth on their fourth line.

Yeah, he got into the league pretty much at his peak too, so it makes sense that his progression was mostly downwards.

He was also better in his last few years with the Flyers than people thought.

In 2016-17 he was really quite good. Like a way above average 3rd liner.

Read simply reflects the reality that decent players are on borrowed time when they hit 30, good players at 32, all stars at 35.
Age curves are similar, just that better players peak at a higher level so they have further to decline before they hit replacement level.

I really liked him on his 1st season. But he just went downhill after that...
