Depends on how they did their draft rankings. They either slid down to scoop up more from a pool of similar prospects, or they liked a few of them more than others.

Hindsight is 20/20, if we had drafted Aho and he had gone onto be the offensive player in his role in Toronto, we could have probably parlayed him into a better young defenseman than Dermott.

2015 was a really strong draft year so there was more value further down the draft. .In a weak draft year trading out of the 1st for a 3rd rounder likely wouldn't make a lot of sense on the surface.

Leafs trading back from #24 Konecny to #34 Dermott already looks like a downgrade, and only if Bracco and/or Dzierkals hits will it seem like a good move as so far things are not looking great as Konecny is already a 20 goal scorer..

With draft hindsight trading back passing on Konecny and taking Aho #34 (+2nd +3rd) instead of Dermott could have been seen as a win regardless of what happens to the picks now.

No it already looks like a upgrade. Dermott is better then Konecny.

We have a 20 goal scorer who's probably going to end up on our 4th line, while our next best LHD after Dermott probably isn't an NHL player.

If we're playing the hindsight game, trading down to 8 for Werenski/Provorov/Rantanen to pick up both Aho and Dermott would be the correct move.

I take Dermott easily. Konecny body will not hold up playing the way he does and Dermott plays an important position and looks like a top 3 defender.

Another thing to add is that the pick we ended up getting at the end was our own pick. We moved down a few times to re acquire our own pick.

Dermott isn't better than konecky. Facts are facts.

I don't know why this Konecky/Dermot is even a discussion. The Leafs had a chance to draft Konecky but obviously they didn't want him, hence the reason they traded down. Maybe they should have taken him....we'll know that answer in ten years.
It's been reported the Leafs traded down from 24 initially because they Larsson would be avaialble. To the Leafs surprise the Ducks drafted Larsson ahead of the Leafs so the Leafs traded down again and got Dermot.

Dermott was great against bottom pairing competition. Koneckny faced 2nd line competition.

I would rather have dermott than koneckny like almost everyone here because the leafs need defence but koneckny is the better player. Dermott was great against bottom pairing competition, while Koneckny plotted 20 goals while facing 2nd line competition.

Lol.

Alrighty then. Thanks.

Dizzy needs to put on his big boy pants and win an AHL job with the Marlies, and then we go from there......

Let him go. He clearly doesn't want to be in Toronto and deep down he probably isn't stupid and sees all the young elite talent on this team and knows that he won't ever crack the NHL.

Dump him ASAP, get rid of all negativity and people who don't want to be in Toronto.
