Depends on how they did their draft rankings. They either slid down to scoop up more from a pool of similar prospects, or they liked a few of them more than others.
Hindsight is 20/20, if we had drafted Aho and he had gone onto be the offensive player in his role in Toronto, we could have probably parlayed him into a better young defenseman than Dermott.
2015 was a really strong draft year so there was more value further down the draft. .In a weak draft year trading out of the 1st for a 3rd rounder likely wouldn't make a lot of sense on the surface.
Leafs trading back from #24 Konecny to #34 Dermott already looks like a downgrade, and only if Bracco and/or Dzierkals hits will it seem like a good move as so far things are not looking great as Konecny is already a 20 goal scorer..
With draft hindsight trading back passing on Konecny and taking Aho #34 (+2nd +3rd) instead of Dermott could have been seen as a win regardless of what happens to the picks now.
