Well I'm one of the Leaf fans that thinks he's overrated (not as bad as it was last year when people were saying he was better than Matthews).

Marner absolutely does benefit from playing with one of either Matthews or Tavares who have both shown to be elite players regardless if they are playing with average to below average wingers but he is still an elite player who is one of the best and creative playmakers in the league when he is on.

IMO its a coin flip between the two players.
I agree with you. Both are riding shotgun with good players and IMO tend to be overrated. I don't know if some Avs fans felt the same in the playoffs but I was kinda surprised that Rantanen had 21pts in 15 games in the playoffs not saying he was bad but I wasn't that impressed by him and could've done way more. Probably used seeing him in his best and wants him that way.

both can be core pieces of an elite team but neither are true franchise wingers like Ovechkin, P. Kane, Kucherov or Pastrnak are.

Yep Rantanen had bad year. But last year he was imo better than Mackinnon in playoffs, also only 0,03 worse ppg in regular season than Mackinnon. Definetly not just "riding shotgun"

This year he seemed off. He skating and balance wasn’t how it was last year. His bambi nickname really stood out in the playoffs

I mean, Rantanen has a better regular season points per game over the last 3 combined seasons too so it’s not like that would help Marner.
LOL. I mean Marner broke out two years ago so of course you need a 3 season sample showing that one year Rantanen got more points. It's pretty obvious there is a trend to presenting things in a favorable light to Rantanen. Even your quote was just more spin.

They are comparable players, the OP is trying too hard.

Those numbers include Rantanen as a rookie playing on a historically bad team. Their productions are neck in neck for the past 3 seasons. Leafs fans always try to reach for past seasons to discredit other players. "Matthews had the better first 3 years in the league so Matthews>MacKinnon".

Development is not linear and some take longer than others especially big guys like Rantanen take longer because they have to learn to use their body.

Why does any of this matter? What would Marners playoff #s be like had he played Arizona and Calgary instead of Boston? It goes both ways and both fanbases over look things.

Voted Rantanen FYI

Which RW would you rather have? Both are on big contracts of roughly 10.9mil for Marner and 9.3mil for Rantanen

Thanks for not just making a post "Who's better?"... I appreciate the effort in providing us with some of the numbers.

Honestly, fairly similar talent level, I wish there was a too close to call option.

Rantanen was pretty soft in the playoffs too. At least he has a mans body though. Marner isn't afraid of physicality just doesn't have the size to do anything about it.

Since his injury earlier in the year he was never really himself. When he's healthy and on his game, he's at or even above MacKinnon imo.

Marner being overpaid has really skewed the public perception of him. He's still elite in every sense of the word... this really isn't close, especially after the season Rantanen just had.

I think it’s close. Marner had a pretty underwhelming season compared to the year before as well. And he was a non factor in the playoffs.
People on either side saying it isn’t close aren’t really being objective.

I think they are equal level players, maybe slight edge in Marner’s favor. They should be making the same amount of money. Sakic got his guy signed to a better deal. Dubas flubbed that one.

Interesting selection of stats posted. Certainly seemed a bit cherry picked.

Despite the injury issues this year I still went with Rantanen. I think he’s the better player of the two when healthy and has the better contract also.

Rants gets hurt more. You play less, it "seems" as though you score more.

People keep pumping him for those playoff numbers but I agree with you, it was the quietest 1.4ppg you will ever see from a player.

It's close but I take Rantanen and the 1.600 in cap space

I think we will need to see how they fare next season. Rantanen plays on the better team and has arguably the best or 2nd best player in hockey on his line, but Marner's linemates are no slouches either. I would expect if the players were even, that we would see Rantanen slightly ahead due to situation, but Marner created quite a gap this year.

Small sample size, though. Let's see what 2021 brings.

Either way, I think there is so little separating them that it can swing either way on any given season. I'm glad I cheer for a team that has one of them, no matter which one it is.

Wait... what?

So because Rantanen and his team have actually shown up in the playoffs and gotten past the 1st round, it hurts Rantanen's playoff pedigree while helping Marners? That's certainly a different spin to try and help Marner.
If I'm using Avs fans logic when they trash Draisaitl, this should be Marner easily because Rantanen gets to play with Mackinnon. Weird how Avs fans change their tune in this situation.
