What we do in hockey echoes in eternity...
Smart move. He has shown promise, but he needs to do it over a larger sample size to earn a multi year deal.
Bit confused here. If I am Johnsson and his agent, why would you not aim a bit higher?
I'm sure Dubas would've happily paid 1-1.5M at 2 years on a 1-way deal. I am not sure if he is waivers-exempt, but if he is and he falters he is losing big money as he'll be making AHL salary and if he isn't performing his next contract wont be much different than this. If he plays well this season, how much extra is he really making? Seems like there is loads of risk and limited gain here.
Yeah, I wanted to get him locked up long-term early, before he has a chance to maximize his potential - Fine with players betting on themselves, though. Looking forward to seeing what he can do with a full year to prove himself.

I believe all qualifying offers are 1-year term.someone mentioned this was the qualification deal. so if this was so, why only 1 year? interesting.
that's the price of winning, as much as I like himBrutal. I wanted him locked up for 4 years. Players like him and Kap are going to be our cap casualties over the next 2-3 years.
What have the leafs won exactly?that's the price of winning, as much as I like him
did I say they have? I said the price of winning is to lose players to the salary cap. Look at teams that have won the cup lately and you'll see they've all had to lose good playersWhat have the leafs won exactly?
The Tavares sweepstakes, the Matthews draft lottery, could add more. What have the leafs won exactly?
EA NHL games have really messed up peoples understanding of the two-way contracts. The amount of friends I have that thinks it means a player doesn't need to pass waivers to be sent down is pretty high lolHe is waiver eligible this year so yeah, he won't be sent down.
If he can't be waived then it makes more sense, as no way the Leafs risk sending him down as he'd be claimed, so he is locked in at that salary. However, even so, my point is that the risk would seem much higher than potential benefit. I think my main point is that unless he has a HUGE year (which would be amazing) I think the potential increase in his value would not be worth the risk on his end. He's not waiver exempt.
He's betting on himself here. He prob thinks he can come in this year, probably play with Naz on the 3rd line, get some PP and PK time, ~40 pts, and then next summer sign a 3-4 year deal around $2-3M (like Hyman and Brown did).
Why settle for 2 years at $1.25M, when 12 months from now he can prob get 3 years at $2.5M?
Not 100% sure but I think qualifying offers can only be for a single year. I just don't remember the last time a player accepted one one the Leafs.someone mentioned this was the qualification deal. so if this was so, why only 1 year? interesting.
“That’s the price of winning”.Would've much preferred a two year deal for more money.
Great, we won a bunch of off seasons. The Tavares sweepstakes, the Matthews draft lottery, could add more.
