Leafs PP is just too predictable. Rielly rarely shoots, so you can just apply light pressure there. The pass is going to Marner on the right halfboards (Plan A) or Matthews on the Left. If it goes to Matthews he is going to shoot it or give it back to Rielly. If it goes to Marner he is going to attempt a low pass to Tavares or cross zone to Kadri/Matthews. So easy to defend and almost no movement. Its a powerplay full of highly skill offensive experts. A monkey could make this powerplay dangerous. Every player on that unit is a great passer and puck handler, they need to add a whole bunch of player movement and not be so predictable.

Did Babcock rip into him, or was it the other way around?

He seemed to be saying 'it's fine' and 'it's not' and 'it's fine' again. Maybe he was being sarcastic but it seemed like the assistant was worked up over something and Babcock was calming him down.

It is indeed silly to suggest that Matthews isn’t a lethal shooter, but he has been cold. He’s sitting on 5 goals in his past 20 games played. That must have a negative impact on the PP. Where were they sitting league wide before that? Like in the middle of December or so?

The Pens have given up 3x the amount of short handed goals than the Leafs have. Now that's embarrassing.

Yup, player movement is vital to a good PP. People think just load up with talent and they can all stand still and score. Most NHL goalies are too good to be beat by any shot they can reasonably predict. You need to make them move laterally and you do that by having your PP guys pass and move often.

They have no one timer on the PP

Caps have Karlsson and Ovechkin ripping bombs the whole time , leafs have no bombs
Agreed. Time to try Matthews on his off wing. He should be ripping 1 timers from low on the right dot like kucherov.

The PP is absolutely loaded with talent having the main unit consist of Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Rielly, and Kadri. They were red hot to start the year but since December have been at the bottom of league, and their PP has fallen to 21st in the league.

There has been 0 changes to the PP outside of splitting them into two units for 2 games before putting things back. It's become predictable and is a massive flaw in the team heading into the playoffs. At what point are there changes made? Jim Hiller is in charge of the PP and last night after yet another disgusting PP this was the scene on the bench

What do people think about this?

Should be on the Leafs board.

I posted this regarding the PP on the Leafs board

The biggest issue right now is the lack of threat from the point. If you watch teams PK against us, all 4 killers are collapsing low blocking any lateral puck movement in tight. Both Rielly and Marner are given time and space at the point but have no options other than passing to each other or along the boards to their respective wingers.

Since the Muzzin trade the 2nd unit has been more successful since he provides another option there.

IMO the easy solution is Kadri off and Muzzin on the 1st unit. Run:

Matthews - Tavares - Marner
Rielly - Muzzin

That sounds exactly like Tampa's setup with one major exception, Matthews and Marner would switch sides so they can take one timers like we have Stamkos and Kucherov set up to do. Often they fake the one timer to go lateral to each other or to Point in the slot, but it's less about body movement and more about getting the puck moving quick. I know Matthews is more of a wrist/snap shot guy but does he and Marner have a decent one timer?

No, that's another big issue. No one on the Leafs ever uses the slapshot besides newly acquired Muzzin. I think I've seen Matthews/Nylander/Marner combined slapshot 10 times since they entered the league. I'm confident Matthews could lay a good one-timer, but I'm also confident Marner's would be a muffin.

Jesus Christ kammy... leafs board.
He's trying to become the new TWS. Always complaining in the GDT's and always tries to find a way to complain about something even after a win, especially in regards to Matthews. Won't be surprised if he ends up being a Islanders or Jets fan soon.

Babcock is the same moron who did the following:
Stapled Brown and Hyman to Matthews for his first 40 games in the NHL
Refused to use Matthews and Marner properly in their first 2 years
Played Komarov over Kapanen and Johnsson in the playoffs last year
Refuses to ever punish Hyman or Brown with demotions for their poor play
Refused to get Matthews and Nylander away from Chara last year
Couldn't play Matthews or Marner over 18 minutes, but grinded Hainsey into dust on the PK last year
Refuses to remove Kadri the PP blackhole from the PP or play our first PP unit 2 minutes ever

Babcock is just as horrendous as the PP coach, the difference is that Babcock happened to coach two of the greatest teams of all time and win with them, so he's considered "gud" by many.

Let's start utilizing some one timers like most teams rely on on their PP. We've got Matthews, Tavares, Nylander and Johnsson that could potentially go on their off wing and wait for Marner to feed them. Clearly the cross ice pass to Matthews on his strong side isn't working anymore.

Their problem is not having a shooter anyone really fears.

Matthews and Tavares are great goal scorers but that is mostly in front of the net.

As others have stated, Matthews is a great shooter. Thing is, teams are recognizing this and not giving him the space to release his shot like he can.

Rielly gets the puck at the point. Dishes it off to Marner on his right, who in turn looks for Matthews cross-ice. It's gotten quite obvious what the Leafs try to do on the powerplay.

On the plus side, if you're a legitimately great team, you really don't need a great PP.

A great PK, yes, cause that forces other teams to beat you 5v5...and if you're a great team, they won't, you'll beat them.

But a great PP? Meh. Lots of teams have won the cup with lousy PPs.

I’m an islanders fan and just a heads up we don’t give a f*** about the leafs. We just really hate one player on the leafs
