At the time of signing, Matthews had 132 points in 144 games in previous two seasons. With 7 points in 13 playoff games

At the time of signing, Rantanen had 171 points in 155 games in previous two seasons. With 18 points in 18 playoff games.

Rantanen's contract was also signed 7 months after Matthew's contract.

So yes, Rantanen has more value than Matthews because he is better.
yeah. obviously.

He grew up in Arizona he is ,/ will be rich by the time he is ufa
Maybe he doesn't care and just wants to go home, but how often has that occurred? IIRC, recently it's only really happened in 2012 with Parise/Suter and 2018 with Tavares. Even then, they got paid handsomely for returning home

Going home isn't very common. If AZ is still below average in 3 years (decent chance as they are starting a rebuild) it reduces the chances even more. Much more likely he stays in TO or pursues another major market

As of right now it'll either take an overpayment or him asking for a trade.

Management will talk to him in the summer after his 4th year is up and see where he's at. If he's open to negotiating we'll do that, if it's clear he won't sign, he's essentially wanting out and we'll hopefully deal him during the year. But for now it'll require a drastic overpayment
he has a no movement clause in the last year though

Dubas gave him the best contract in the league, bar none. Walks him into free agency without buying years, NMC, in excess of $11M when he was an RFA. He can pretty much get a 7x or 8x max contract in 3 years. He has all the leverage.
yes for the player absolutely. it should be the gold standard for every player agent course they put on . but for the team it was absolutely atrocious.

Maybe Matthews is a LeBron fan.

He's going to go home to Arizona, fix the laughing stock reputation, sign for less, advocate and bring in free agents to bring the Stanley Cup to his home.

If Matthews is able to do that, he would gain legendary status, and NHL PR would surely love that also.

Yep. Assuming Dubas still has a job in 3 years, he should be fired if Matthews walks for nothing.

We'll have to see how the leafs or other teams in the league are at that time to see if he lifts the NMC. Maybe the leafs are contending that year and they'll want to self-rental and hope he stays. Maybe we suck and there's some contenders he'd be willing to go to for the year since he's leaving anyways. Or, maybe he decides he wants to stay like most superstars do.

But yes, everyone knows Dubas sucks at contracts and he got bent here

Youd need to find a team with two #1d

They aren't trading their only #1d for a great 1c.

I'd say maybe Dallas could lean more on Klingberg, and trade Heiskanen.

I could also imagine Carolina maybe moving Slavin if their D holds up as a group this year.

Idk maybe go with the HF mob and trade him to Arizona. Maybe if their teardown works out they'd trade Chychrun? That might take time though, and Matthews' deal is quickly running out

Dubas might not have a choice. Last year of the contract has NMC.
I know. But even if it's out of his control at that point, he's responsible for the contract. I would fire Dubas on the spot if news broke AM34 was signing in Arizona with nothing recouped.

Caveat perhaps being a cup win in the final three years.

Drai? I would rather keep drai but that is around fair. Cheaper and better imo but you give McDavid the best young shooter
Edmonton wouldn’t make that move, or would be silly to make it. Drai is 3.1M cheaper and signed for 1 year more and you are far more likely to get him to re-sign in Edmonton than Matthews. I don’t think the difference between Drai and Matthews is big enough to sacrifice a year of term and over 3M of cap per year.

Before thinking about winning 4 series in a single playoff year, maybe Leafs should think about winning 4 playoff games in a single playoff year first.

He has 3 years remaining at 11.6 mil and NMC in his final year.

Leafs need : top pairing dman and a legit starter

Let the bidding begin.
Cheers
Are you serious? Your cheap attempt to troll is an epic fail.

The best GOAL scorer in the NHL is not being traded, but you already know this.
