Last year we used Holtzer, Kostka and later O'Byrne on D.....We are vastly better this year as far as ability and skill goes, it now is a matter of playing within the system as a 5 man unit as the system Carlyle is playing is more dependent on all 5 men then other teams.

Our goaltending was better last year as a result of limiting quality scoring chances....as that is what the D zone system is designed to do. Time will tell just how Carlyle does this year with a more skilled group of D man.

How is his strategy "more dependant on all 5 men than other teams?" You can't substantiate this statement, it's just not true. How are we "vastly better?"

Limited quality scoring chances was not why ou goaltending was better. There was an abundance of quality chances. The goaltending was better because the goaltending was better.

Yes it was. Have a look at the shot charts. We were one of the better teams in the league last season at holding the opposition to the outside and forcing them to take low-quality shots. That's why we didn't have the best possession/shot numbers but still won a lot of games.

Exactly. People read too much into analytics, and it does not accurately gauge the effectiveness of the counter attacking system that Carlyle prefers to employ.

Despite the Leafs' possession stats and average number of shots allowed last season, the Leafs gave up fewer quality scoring chances than their opponent for the most part.

Do you even know or understand our D zone system....

You are a person who simply watches a game without understanding what you are watching..... We did limit scoring chances last year over the year before. We will improve in this area again this year, with a lot more players familiar with the system Carlyle uses.

Shots on goal are not a clear indication of scoring chances.....

Awwww. Clarke is feeling a tad jilted.

More telling is Bobby Ryan's comment "I still really do owe him quite a bit for becoming the player that I am and that isn’t lost on me one bit.” or anonymous man's comment “The bottom line is are you there to play hockey and win or are you there to be coddled?”. Clarke just sound like someone who needs a hug.

So let me understand this as someone who watched Punch Imlach coach. He was not the most popular coach who was also demanding but took his team to 6 finals, winning 3 of them. Similar with Mike Keenan (without that lousy Panthers team) who made the playoffs just about every year. So a few players don't like his style because he didn't play them as much as they would have liked. Tough. The coach makes all decisions like that so suck it up buttercup.

If you keep making the same mistakes, you keep hearing about it, it's called being accountable. Ask Getzlaf and Perry who made them into the hockey players they are Clarke - they're already on record that it was Randy Carlyle - candyazz!

This quote from this column...http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/27029/ramblings-complaints-castaways-and-canned-coaches... sums up my feelings perfectly about Clarke MacArthur's complaints.

"Clarke the carpenter: Interesting to hear much-traveled Clarke MacArthur make his not-so-positive feelings about former head coach Randy Carlyle known before the Leafs’ home opener against MacArthur’s Ottawa Senators over the weekend. The comments were a bit more temperate than similarly negative comments from another former Leaf, Mikhail Grabovski, who was bought out by Toronto before signing late in the offseason with Washington. Still, it made us cringe to hear MacArthur boohooing about being made a healthy scratch in the playoffs last spring, and how it took the fun out of the game for him. Seriously? Get over yourself just a bit. Maybe it had something to do with the fact MacArthur had managed just two goals in his last 20 regular season games. Or maybe it was the fact that MacArthur had developed a reputation as a guy who showed a little flash, but little in the way of substance, since he was drafted 74th overall in 2003. Whether things change in Ottawa -- his fourth NHL club, by the way -- remains to be seen, although the carping about his treatment in Toronto suggests not. "
