I don't mind people pumping the kids tyres, he's had a great year but having doubts about him are fair Walshy

He's an overager, from what I understand he's a rover who leads the rush rather than play like your usual pro defensive type and I've heard he's a bit "exciting" in his own zone

I don't care about size but those other things make me more willing to withhold judgement until he gets into the pros and we see how his game translates

5'10 and 77kg seems like he's on the small side if your looking at NHL defenseman and size rather than average

Big shot for a little guy. I would be shocked if his offense doesn't at least carry to the AHL. The concern with him will be reigning in his attacking so he is more than just a pp specialist.

Well let's see how he does vs men next year in the AHL if he can do anything close to Sandin we are money.

Just to play devils advocate I read a lot of similar comments about Ryan Ellis and look at him now. It took him until he was 27 to round out his game but now he is a premier offensive D and a solid #3 D.

That's why Mac is a 4th round pick, he's a project. But the Leafs have good development and will be patient with him.

Changing position doesnt happen very much these days. Who was the last one who did it after going professional? Burns? Buff? Before them?

and lets face the odd few who do are rarely more than 4th line forwards anyway, even buff was on the 4th or 3rd line at best when he switched im pretty sure same story for burns. So lets say Mac could be a bottom pair dman, that is way more valuable than a 4th line forward. Hell a 7th D is more important than a 4th line forward if the coach changes them around enough

I certainly think you'd be wrong to write the kid off, his production and season has been impressive by any standard, he also has some very translatable skills at the next level with his skating, vision and hands

The question I have is will his defensive game translate? And if it's a bit questionable can that side of the game be taught and developed?

He's an interesting case study imo

Well he was just ok in years past this year he leads all CHL D in points, hes turned a corner. Now hr is over age so we have to see what he can do on the Marlies. If he can be anything like Sandin we stole a good one late.
