Sounds good. Hopefully he gets his skating together. The deal will be a steal if that happens.

Yep. Maybe $500k or $250k more than I'd have hoped, but I can't be too furious.

Now, work on that skating, kid.

A shade over four million over six years would have had me dancing in the streets a year ago. I still really like it... but I think Maatta has a lot of work to put in if he wants to be the defenseman everyone seems to think he is. Though obviously he hasn't had the greatest luck in his young career, either.

Tough deal to complain about. Seems good for both sides.

I'm not too worried about Maatta in the long-term. A healthy off-season of training will go a long ways, but I do hope he can figure out how to step it up a bit in the current season, 'cause boy does this team need him playing well.

I have no problem not going the bridge contract route with Maatta. He's such a low-maintenance player, you need guys like him.

I actually like this a lot. If he doesnt get his skating together and stays at the same level its a bit too much but not so much that you wouldnt be able to trade him or stuff. If he gets his skating together however this deal becomes a steal as you get a top2/3 d-man for 4 million a season

Since it's 6 years, the price is fine. I was expected a 2-yearish bridge deal a touch lower. But having him locked-up long term is good.

I expected 4x4, so that's pretty good, if a little risky given his health.

Hopefully the team has some evidence to support that his issues are behind him.

A teeny biiiitttt too much but the kid could turn out to be a beast and worth way more within those 6 yrs.
Good gamble.

And a moveable contract IF it comes to that.

It's a good contract not a great one for the Pens. Gives Maatta term and the cap hit is a steal if he breaks out. I'm not sure he's a 4MM player yet, but he will be soon.
