If the players want to grow a beard/facial hair? ... Let them!

If a player wants to pick number 88 or 93 as oppose to a a generic number given to you in the 30's or 40's... Let them pick it!

Some of these rules are just insane really. Beards and certain numbers add character, give personality.

Personally, if by having a beard or certain number is going to make a player play better or to his capabilities/comfort level... Then by all means let them do it. This is 2016, get with the new age and move out from the old..

Not sure what line of work you are in but let's say you are asked to work the sales floor at a trade show.

The marketing team hands out booth attire. Everyone is expected to wear it and come with what they deem "neat appearance and professional". Some rules are given. Clean, don't douse yourself in High Karate, comb your hair, etc

Do you wear the attire and follow the expected guidelines?

Or do you show up in a ripped offensive tshirt with chicken wing sauce from last night on your face blaring Neil Young's Keep on Rocking in the Free World?

I'd play to my crowd, if I was at a trade show in downtown hillbilly heaven I'd dress in a ripped t-shirt with chicken wing sauce all over me blaring Neil Young Rockin in the free world and I;d get my wife to wear daisy dukes and a tshirt that is 3 sizes too small...

A hockey players uni is what we see on the ice, he is playing to his crowd. the fact Subban shows up in crushed velvet or Dion shows up in plad really does not impact my decision to watch or purchase the Leafs product.

Lou's policy is not about selling a product to us, its about him feeling like he is implementing a policy that some how makes the team feel unified. this gives him the warm and fuzzies not the players.

In fairness, a number of players stayed in NJ through free agency.

They must have felt something.

Always pumped to know what number a player chooses.

Yankees have had one since the 70s. I think they are pretty new age successful no?

It's 2016. Clean shaven is passe. It's all about stubble and beards now. Even women, many of them these days like stubble and beards on men because they see it as more masculine. I have a baby face and while clean shaven does look nice on me, I prefer having stubble.

Personally I prefer to shave once every 4 days. Because when it gets to 5 days, my facial hair starts to really irritate me and it becomes a pain in the ass to remove.

My girlfriend likes stubble however so I try to make it once every 5-6 days for her. But by then there's more irritation, razor burn/bumps and it can hurt like hell to remove my mustache by that point. And if I leave my mustache on, I look like a 1970s pornstar (think Wendel Clark or Mike Brown with just a mustache).

When I worked a 9-5 in the office, I'd shave 2x a week. I should have shaved 3x a week. But I am really lazy. My previous girlfriend was very picky about facial hair. She complained about the roughness if I had a 5' o clock shadow (meanwhile my current girlfriend loves stubble. lol). So I'd have to shave 3x a week for her.

It's a professional look and these guys are professionals. If my job was to play a game for millions of dollars, having to keep my face clean shaven would be a non-factor.

A team of rugged individualists or a team that will follow their coaches and management regardless of whether they see the merit in the direction given?

Think I'd prefer the latter.

The problem here is thinking that this rule is the difference between professionalism and completely dishevelry.

It's amazing that other any other team besides the Maple Leafs and Devils have been able to win Stanley Cups with all their "rugged individualism".

If a player flees a team or doesn't join it simply because he can't grow a beard then the player doesn't have his priorities in order regarding his pro hockey career.

Agreed.

But that's beside the point that the rule is stupid and doesn't accomplish what it's supposed to accomplish.

Lets face it, most who want hair cut and maintained are jealous cause they cant grow a full beard or a full head of hair. It sucks that society judges people who have hair.

I'd rather have a rule where you aren't allow to shave or cut your hair. It'd be awesome. It could possibly intimidate opponents as well.

The NHLOA also have a no facial hair policy. Can you imagine a bunch of beardos skating around calling diving penalties. . It is lazy. . Get uo early and take 5 more minutes to shave and make.yourself look respectable. Did you know that a beard is full of bacteria aND feces. . Gross..

It looks bad and it's a sponge of dirt.

I have no provlem with multiple millionaires having to adhere to company policy.

If you want to grow a beard.. go work behind the wall rather then in front of it

What world do you live in, where people who have beards don't take care of them?

I assure you, my beard is as clean, or cleaner, than anyone's hair on this board, because I have beard soap, a have a good brush for it, and condition it properly. There's actually a study that show those with beards have cleaner faces, due to taking better care of their face.

Bottom line, beards, tattoos, trimmed eyebrows, haircuts.... have ZERO effect on one's level of work rate, motivation, etc.

I started a work assignment up at a construction site (generally in the office myself where I had to keep the facial hair normal looking)...Been here since August, shaved for the first time this past Sunday, that was a nice beard...but it'll be back. Now that I shaved though, I went from looking like a 60 year old homeless lumberjack to a 10 year old...stupid shaving. My wife hates my facial hair...but it's my face, not hers.

I agree with your assessment, the current trend is beards are awesome (I personally think they've always been awesome) and stubble too... Lou has a very old school mindset going on there, and I think most men actually look more professional if they have some facial hair and it's well maintained.

Just don't let it grow like wild fire and be out of control and there should be no big deal.

I fully support Lou on this. I can completely see the value in it. All the little things matter, and collectively, they have an impact team-wide.

It's funny how issues like this really out people's out-dated, archaic mindsets.

Most that complain about or dislike facial hair either lack the ability to grow it, have wives that won't allow it :)laugh:), or work in a stone age style workplace.

I work for the Province, in a non-labour, professional role, and maintain a beard that would make a viking conqueror proud.
