As a neutral fan (Jokerit was always my team) i gotta say that i haven't been following Liiga much during the last few years. This year i decided to follow more, and i have to say that i'm really surprised. Level of Liiga is much better than "public opinion" seems to be, especially the top teams like Tappara, Ilves and Kärpät are at the very top of Europe.

Then there are teams like SaiPa and Sport which shouldn't be playing at the top level, but overall level of hockey is very good. This new coming of Ilves is very good for the Finnish hockey, fan culture is booming and it's a very healthy organization nowadays. Brings a whole new aspect to the biggest derby in Finland.

If only they'd open Liiga, Sport has been below Liiga level pretty much since they entered. And on top of that their junior production is pretty much zero. Espoo or Jokerit :)D) would bring much more instead of Sport.

Opening up to Mestis would be great, but it should also involve reducing the number of teams in the 1st division. 15 teams is too many for such a small country; going down to perhaps 10-12 would not only improve the quality of play at the top, but also markedly improve the second division, and create more public interest. (aside from the boost the 2nd div. would see from having the ability to promote based on merit. Hopefully this would be enough to establish full professionalism, as in Sweden's 2nd tier). I'd also reduce the 2nd level to about 12 teams as well. Maybe divided into separate Northern and Southern leagues.

(it also needs to be said that there should be a pan-Nordic League above this, but I don't anticipate this happening soon)

Having 3 top tiers with 10 teams could look something like this:

1st tier (pro)
HIFK
Ilves
Jokerit
KalPa
Kärpät
Lukko
Pelicans
Tappara
TPS
Ässät

2nd tier (pro)
HPK
Jukurit
JYP
Ketterä
Kiekko-Espoo
KooKoo
RoKi
SaiPa
Sport
TUTO

3rd tier (semi-pro)
FPS
Hermes
Hokki
IPK
JHT
JoKP
KeuPa
Kiekko-Vantaa
KOOVEE
Pyry

Each tier could have 8 teams advance to the playoffs and bottom 2 to the relegation where they would meet the "finalists" of the lower tier. That's of course an extreme proposal which emphasizes mobility, but in any case there should be no more than 12 teams per tier.

Add teams from the Baltics. There seems to be about 6 or so decent arenas.

100% there should be a pan-Nordic league

The Balts don't have the money to make an expansion worthwhile for Finnish teams, they'd need to figure out how to make the proposal a win-win. Finnish teams could continue to play some games in Tallinn though if the demand is there.

HK Zemgale is playing Mestis this season and has brought no such benefit that would make continuing the experiment worthwhile. On average 658 spectators have watched their away games in Finland and that includes some novelty bonus. They're dead last in league standings, too. I don't know where a HK Mogo or a Hockey Punks team would find the millions necessary to finance such guest seasons.

Some rosters starting to resemble a sick joke, allegedly Jokerit is not good enough of an organization for Liiga and yet there are multiple clubs that year after year can't get through a season fielding a serious team.
