Can someone compare Toni Söderholm and Hannu Pikkarainen.
Player Types? Role in the team? Better Player?

Thx

Like I said before, Söderholm is a very experienced and intelligent hockey player. He does things the right way and doesn't make many mistakes. He can make very clever passes in all zones to advance the attack and has a pretty good slap-shot too. He's solid without the puck as well, and very good on the power-play. Can kill penalties too, and doesn't take many. He's gotten slower and lost some mass to keep up over the years, but I have no doubt he's going to be effective in DEL.

Then there's Pikkarainen. He was a very highly touted prospect in his day. At one point it was thought he would become what Söderholm is today -- a star, a leader, a legend. That never happened, though not because he lacked talent. He's a great skater and plays with a lot of offensive flair. He's a good passer, and shoots well and often. However his work ethic is known to be quite poor, and he makes many mistakes and poor choices. Expect turnovers, defensive lapses and occasional flashes of brilliance. When properly utilised and motivated, he can be dominant, but that's not something you can count on. Most likely the best role would be as a power-play specialist with sheltered minutes otherwise.

Who is into pay-tv sports? :D

I think it's good though, if hockey was on free tv, there wouldn't me as much spectators on the games.

Apparently you Swedes and Norwegians. App. 60% of Swedes and Norwegians have a pay-tv package (that commonly includes sports channels) where as in Finland the number is ~30%.

What would people say that the impact of the KHL on Liiga was last season, and what will it be this upcoming season?

The league average attendance went down since Jokerit left, otherwise nothing really.

Unless you're a Jokerit fan, I doubt many people (that follow the sport) started following the KHL because of that.

Which was solely due to Jokerit playing in the biggest arena in Finland. Just for clarification.

My sense is that Jokerit joining the KHL did generate some extra interest towards said league. But it certainly didn't affect Liiga save for losing those pre-existing Jokerit fans. While people rooting for other teams may have caught some Jokerit games, especially if they live in the capital area, it's not like they abandoned their Liiga teams as a result. At least so far, there appears to be room for both just nicely.

Has there been a reduction in terms of talent in the Liiga? Have the good players basically been sucked out from the teams?

It's a feeder-league so a familiar cycle repeats itself year after year: players move on to wealthier leagues after one or two good seasons. The NHL has always been there but the KHL has replaced Sweden as the destination of choice in Europe.

Summer 2014 had the biggest effect for Liiga obviously as Jokerit took several players from Liiga teams. Although some of them might have found a place in other KHL teams (notably Aaltonen. Huhtala, Sallinen and Ohtamaa probabilities for lower-half KHL teams).

This year Jokerit added only one player from Liiga: Pekka Jormakka.

Apparently the winter classic between Ilves and HIFK is being called off:

Relegation series returning in 2019? I don't see that happening, IMO they leaked this just because the Finnish hockey federation doesn't want relegation-friendly hockey people calling them out on their BS.
