Highly ironical that Pikkarainen gets hired because of the same thing that got him fired in Mestis.

Google translate was a bit confusing. Does this mean that there will be no relegation series between the 14th team and the Mestis champion? And what was the reference to KooKoo?

No relegation series. KooKoo will be promoted for next season.

Liiga is going to be (and actually already is) closed series. Mestis is more like AHL is to NHL.

The change isn't as dramatic as it sounds, because teams very rarely raised from/were relegated to Mestis. Most mestis teams aren't economically close to Liiga teams, so the relegation was seen pointless.

Champion of Mestis can apply for Liiga licence in the future, too. It has to meet the economical and arena standards and be able to pay the Liiga licence in order to have a chance to be accepted as expansion team. Sport and KooKoo have met these standards.

If Liiga actually becomes 16 team series, the playoff spot will be worth more than before, which is right direction. Just getting into playoffs could make little hockey boom in the town.

Slightly off topic but over 9000 in attendance in Turku when TPS secured the A-juniors gold. :amazed:

Edit: updated to 10620. New A-juniors attendance record.

Just like all the other sports fans in Finland. When their team is winning they show up. When it's losing, empty seats. We're a nation of gloryhunters/bandwagon fans.

There's demand for winning hockey in Turku, but not for the **** show they've been running for years.
It's kind of basic economics of professional sports. If the products sucks, people will not buy it.
The on-ice product has sucked for years, and people have been voting with their legs.
