He's what we hope Dotchin becomes. Dotchin could use someone to learn from as a sidekick to a #1. Dotchin needs to learn to PK and be better in his own zone which is what Girardi can still do a bit.

While true we have enough bottom pairing defensemen already. He maybe improves our PK and that's about it. Meanwhile he eats up a roster spot we could use to groom one of Dotchin, Koekkoek, Sergachev, Hajek... while acquiring a true top-4 D to fix our real issues on the blueline. Also, 2 years x $3M is just to high a price to pay for a #6/7 PK specialist with a 'veteran presence'.

Anyone would tell you that of the two, Girardi and Del Zotto, that the latter had them pulling their hair out more. So there's that

Girardi is in the mold of how we like our RHD to be. The problem is he's on the wrong side of the bell curve and has shown significant signs of wear and decline. 3 million is too much for a guy you want to use sparingly.

Not to mention that his statistics last year were alarming. He was one of the worst defensemen in the league.

I guess Yzerman just wanted to have a veteran d-man signed just incase one of our young guys doesn't make the jump to the nhl level. I agree that garrison was better but didn't we trade him so that we could keep dotchin and koekkoek? He was used as a top 4 guy and saw 20 min a night in NY, no way he sees that much ice time in tampa.
I'm not saying i'm glad we signed him but I don't think this is some horrible deal that will ruin the team.
