ultimately the movies are based on comic books anyhow so it is hard to fault the filmmakers if they are following the models provided for them. Haven't read the comics myself though.

It's not much about the childish antics in the movie or the wacky techs but the way they don't really dig into Marvel history. I mean, is it that hard to get Chris to do thor and some wimp to do the Dr Blake in the first one at least ?

Not to mention the way they did the Dark Elves was a disgrace. They came off like aliens instead of Elves. Like the tall blue dudes passing for Frost Giants in the first movie. It's like they are afraid to even touch the fact that Thor may be fantasy.

Thor 2 was so stupid that it was the most painful and cringe-inducing experience I have ever had in a movie theatre.

You seem like a smart guy, henceforth, I knew you wouldn't like it. ;)

They actually thought that having a guy streak naked at Stonehenge was funny .. in fact they repeated the joke several times.

OMG even their attempt at humour is so pathetic. Even in the first movie when people thought it was "sweet", I couldn't stand it. You watch the first Superman flick and you've got classic lines that are funny but not forced like Lois saying:"Who's Got me? Who's Got You?" and then you have Kate Dennings making a joke about Thor's abbs in Thor. Supposely to lighten the mood or to force some characterization whatever that "oh we got Gods but look at this person, she's a regular girl that we can relate to".

Yeah I don't get why they're afraid of magic.

It really doesn't work as science fictions. 9 realms? A 5,000 year cycle? Sorry that's not science fiction.

They didn't look like aliens to me, they looked like nerds in cosplay outfits.

I thought Kure was pretty cool, albeit too small (CGI!) but they mised the boat on the tech and things, I agree.

But I'm pretty sure the talll blue dudes really were frost giants

I was saying aliens cause they had these big black hi-tech ships and so forth.

Well they said they were but it wasn't Frost Giants from mythology or comics, you know who are hairy freaks with big noses and long beards like this:

Wow ... this is good.

Let me know how this looks. I looked at the promos and interviews with Seth MacFarlane and it looked like a visual spectacle but had the feel of a "Science for Dummies". Not saying mass audience science tutorials aren't needed in this culture but will there be meat to this?

If you want "meat" you can load the arXiv and read some technical papers.

Asking for the right apparels for the Spartans in 300 is far from being irrational. The movie is based on that.

No, the movie is based on a comic book. And so is its aesthethics. The point of the comic book was not to teach us history in the least and its themes would have been subverted by any attempt at realism.

When you watch 300, you think you are seeing the Battle Thermopylae? Not really.

What you are watching is the story of Leonidas and his brave 300 as told by Dillios(the sole survivor) to the rest of the greek army on the eve of a major battle. Did it really happen like that? Only Dillios knows. And he has every incentive to craft the most epic, badass story possible, playing fast and loose with the truth, because he wanted to fire up his comrades.

And of course, in a meta sense, this is Miller/Snyder telling the story to us. Just as Dillios is telling this story to the greeks to teach them about sacrifice, solidarity and heroism, Miller/Snyder are telling us this story to show us the same but also to tell us something about the nature of storytelling.

That's how I see it anyway.

Used to be a fan of these types of shows/series, and not only about astronomy like this one, but anthropology, history, etc. But now I can't stand them.

after watching a few different shows/series on the same subject, you realise they talk about the same two or three facts over and over.

It's missing sort of a step two show, something like "this is what you saw in geology for dummies, in the second show/season we go a little further".

Oh I get that. You mean you want catering to people who are neither average blokes with no knowledge nor dedicated specialists.

Try the magazine American Scientist, which is totally different from Scientific American.

that, and more than re-using the same two or three facts over and over... I mean, (sure, all the same week is coincidence but still), for example, last week in three different shows on three different subject I saw people talking about the vinland map, all saying the same friggin thing about it...

it's like watching the same comedy over and over again, at some point, the jokes arent funny anymore.

as for the mags, yeah! It's a good idea, I go a different route though, whenever I feel like reading on a specific subject I download books made for University courses (or college if it's something I know nothing about).

can't wait to see the new cosmos with degrasse tyson

just finished true detective. im not gonna say much because i don't want to spoil anything but im gonna write in white text just to be certain. well, maybe a bit of spoilers

i liked that it never dumbed itself down for the sake of the audience. the acting was obviously great and the plot a mature one. i absolutely loved the closure at the end of the series. far, far too many tv shows don't bother with proper closure (they spent a good 10 minutes on it) that it felt refreshing.

however, i didn't like it as much as imdb did (9.5 wut). it over complicates itself with narratives techniques that ultimately, do absolutely nothing for the series other than to make you really pay attention (which makes the finale an even bigger disapointment but more on that later). most of the plot of the entire series unravels itself in the last half hour, which completely changes the pace of the series and not for the best in my opinion. like going from riding a slow, determined and ponderous tractor to a go kart. overall i'd say that it's slick, mature series that ultimately lacks in how the plot was developed, ****** plot, masterful delivery if that makes any sense.

im rambling a bit but the finale let me down. build up this giant multi-layered plot just to at the end, lay it all out on the table going 'well sorry, ran out of episodes, here's the bad guy'.

RE: True Detective 1x08

Holy hot damn that was amazing... my eyes are all watery.

Tidbit on the dialogue: Matthew McConaghey said "L'chaim fatass" before driving away from the sheriff. L'chaim is a Yiddish word meaning 'to life' that Jews say before drinking, like the way English-speakers say "cheers!"
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=l'chaim

I figured the non-jews would have no idea what he said, so here's an explanation for you all.
