I get it, but Hickey and Leo only have 1yr left. Eberle has 3yrs...
Yes but Eberle has value as a player, and for a top six player he isn’t committed to long term at a high price.

Eberle isn’t overpaid. Horace kid, that’s a risk for Seattle. Duchene is, Ryan Johansen is

And now it is down to Eberle.

It could be a trade (probably not) or, more likely, Lou has spoken to Seattle and discussed selection possibilities.

If Seattle is interested in Eberle (due to a dearth of quality RWs they can draft), I have no problem leaving him exposed, PROVIDED the Isles can upgrade elsewhere or at least sign Palmieri for cheaper. Palmieri just brings more physically.

The Tuffoli deal should be the benchmark, four years around a $4.25 AAV, maybe it gets to $4.5 million AAV. But no more than four years (one year longer than Eberle).

The Isles need to save some money versus the Eberle AAV, at least until some bad contracts churn off next year and the cap goes up, then they can probably live with the extra year of term.

Shedding Eberle while being able to extend Palms and Cizikas would be an ideal tradeoff. It keeps four viable centers in the fold and maintains a physical team (especially with Lee on the way back and Wahlstrom showing some grit).

This one's pretty simple for me....

You don't leave your 4th leading scorer on the team exposed in an expansion draft unless you have a replacement for him first.

I know you mentioned Palmieri as a replacement, but I actually think Eberle is better (he outscored Palmieri in both the regular season and playoffs).

Personally I want no part of Palmieri. If we're going to get rid of Eberle I'd like it to be for a real improvement - Not a sideways move at best.

And that would make us all sad for a few minutes....

... and then we'd sign Pelech, Sorkin, Beauvillier, Cizikas, Greene and Palmeiri with our cap savings.

I love our guys. And if we win the Cup without Josh Bailey and Nick Leddy, I would think "You know, it really sucks that two guys who were committed to this team when we were a dumpster fire don't get to share in this moment. It would be really awesome to see Bailey be the second guy to skate the Cup around in an Islanders jersey."

But I'd also think that 10 minutes after losing my mind in joy, and probably soaked in champagne I sprayed on myself.

Losing Josh Bailey would emotionally suck, but also be an asset management success.

We're resigning Pelech, Sorkin, Beauvillier no matter what and I'd bet we resign Cizikas.

Now I really don't care too much who's wearing an Islander jersey on the day they win the Cup, but going from Bailey to Palmieri is a step back so I don't see how that gets it done.

I think there's no reason to leave Bailey exposed and lose him for nothing. You want to trade him for a better forward that I'm all for. But most importantly...I don't want to use any cap savings from the expansion draft to resign Palmieri who to me is a slightly lesser version of Eberle.

Wrong! It would be Varlamov for a second and 1/2 retention on Greiss to be back-up.

In all seriousness, since it looks like it could now be avoided, I would prefer they hold off on dealing Varlamov until next offseason at the earliest.
So true. This guy is still a top notch goalie and our #1 without a doubt. Split time with Sorokin next year and see what they playoffs bring.

I'm going to back you up on this.

Whereas I did see a few things in the playoffs that showed me why and how Palmieri has value, the overall body of his work basically shocked me. He's a poor skater who can't carry the puck and is neither a sniper nor a set-up man. On top of it all, there were times where he was falling all over the ice and I felt he was too often little more than a pylon without the puck. I believe he can play on a team with few realistic ambitions and put up 25 goals, because he does have that scrappy "hang-around-the-net-for-ugly-stuff" aspect to him. And that's fine. He can pot a half dozen or so wrist shots in the net per season too.

But he's nowhere near capable of what Eberle can bring from a skating and puck carrying aspect and Eberle has a more precise shot to boot.

I understand the need to open some options financially by having Eberle's 5.5 MM moved, but not so as to make space to keep Palmieri by giving him that 5.5 MM instead. That'd be a downgrade.

If anything, we'd need to be upgrading that spot.

Re. Panik:
This guy is little more than the price that needed to be paid in order to move a 5.5 MM Dman who needs to be protected for the expansion draft AND actually get a decent asset (the 2nd rounder) in return. You weren't making that move at this juncture without providing your trade partner with some roster/cap relief.

The guy is a decent lower line player, but we're swimming in those already. Let's see what happens with particularly Bellows, Koivula, and Dal Colle in the coming days.

And let's not get too attached to those two 2nds we've got in this draft.

If I had to bet on it, I'd say one of them will be moved for the sake of dumping salary.

PREDICTION
IF Lou makes an Expansion Draft deal with Francis, I am calling the following right now:
- SEA gets COL 2nd, Bellows, and Hickey
- NYI sees Seattle select Ladd

If you think that GMs/scouts can't see past a horrible team, see the raw talent of a player, and project how that player will play on their team, not sure what to tell you.

The dude's a pro. No doubt. :thumbu:

you don’t have to tell me anything, I was posting my thoughts. I simply think you’re incorrect about a player getting older, who is not as fast as he was and joining a team that doesn’t preach defense like trotz. People can disagree.

I don't think Eberle is overpaid, nor will I lose my shit if he stays. But if someone has to go between a cost controlled Bellows or Eberle, who was mostly invisible in the playoffs, I would prefer Ebs going.

BTW, this is all under the assumption Lou has someone lined up as his replacement...

Yup, I'm not the biggest Bailey fan but I agree with periferal, keep him. We need some more offense and Lee(coming back from the knee) and Wahlstrom are still questions marks and if they play well, great. The system Trotz has is nice but losing game 7 1-0 definitely points to our weakness. Don't need a lot of scoring but do need some. Jeez , I'm still pissed and the idiots dented the Cup too.

So based on that then you think that Yzerman got robbed in making this deal since he took on an "older player who's not as fast" on a team that "doesn't play defense" as well as the Isles?

Well we will see by the next trade deadline when it's likely another GM takes on Leddy for at least the same thing Yzerman gave up in a better draft.

Leddy bought back more then I expected. Nice job Lou.

Now let's pawn Ebs off on Seattle, without paying the rumored asking price of a 1st and 3rd.

No chance Lamoriello is paying that price to pawn Eberle off, they'd likely just select him if he was left exposed. If they don't, oh well.

I can't wait for the posts from all the people cheering this deal when they realize it just cleared salary for Cizikas.

I'll be pretty annoyed if that's the move.

I've heard you'll often find him at the disco.

You and everyone who liked this joke should be ashamed of yourselves.

Palmieri can play up and down the lineup, is more of a shoot first guy, is physical, and drives to the net. Eberle can float around the perimeter and rack up points that way. They're going to give similar production but bring different skills. If Palmieri can be brought in to replace Eberle, but on a cheaper deal than the one Eberle is on, then it's a no brainer to bring him in (if a different upgrade isn't available).

Uhhhhh....What???

Zero chance it only takes a 2nd round pick (they'd probably take Bellows anyway so that's no incentive for Seattle) for another team to take Ladd and Hickey.

Yikes!

Dear admins can you please lock @periferal ‘s account?

Ranger and/or Leafs fans have hacked it again.

:sarcasm:

Of all the things I could've gotten my account locked for... ;)

Anyway...If you think getting rid of Eberle and replacing him with Palmieri puts us over the top, god bless. I just happen to think we should be taking any assets/cap space and aiming higher...Like actually improving the talent level on the team - Not roughly keeping it the same.

Last night, I wasn’t keen on the notion of signing Greene for the sake of exposure. Even if the likelihood of him getting chosen is next to nil.

I can now see it being done if the Isles have already worked out with Seattle on who is getting selected.

It's not about putting the team over the top, it's about getting an even swap in production but a better fit, at a cheaper price. I'm not advocating for Eberle to go, but it's not about Palmieri being an upgrade on Eberle, it's just about the cap space.

We've also seen enough of Eberle to know he's not a good playoff performer the later the rounds get. He can't hang when there is less space available.

I think it’s a realistic move closer, but definitely not a sure fire “over the top” move.

Palmieri is just a more traditional shoot first winger on a pass ad nauseam team. Better two-way and better fit moving down the lineup as HOPEFULLY Wahlstrom moves up the lineup.

But it all of course depends on the deal. But if they can get him at shorter term than Eberle (unlikely) or same term but lower hit (possible)… then it’s another win.

Assuming he gets 3 years (same as Eberle now) I’d rather Palmieri playing second or third line in year three than Eberle.

Before anyone writes off Eberle, a reminder that Lee will be back healthy next season. I believe his absence hurt eberle the most.

Geez man you’re really reaching. That’s not what I typed. I said I disagreed with your second bullet point that he’d get a 2nd. That’s what I said. I think the trade was good for both teams but as good as SY is I don’t think he was some guru on this deal. Both did a good job. We will see what happens and don’t worry, I won’t look these messages up to say I told you so if I’m right.

I dont know necessarily what was wrong with Palms last season, but I would still take the odds that statistically it was more an aberration than some decline in his game. He played on a woeful Devils team and then it took some time for him to get going with us (and he played on the third line for most of that experience).

We are still taking about someone who is almost a full year younger than Jordan and has scored at a much better clip the last 6 years, and that is including Kyle's stinker last season:

KP: 142 goals in 414 games
JE: 121 goals in 423 games

Kyle's previous 5 had him averaging 30 goals (29.82) per 82 and more importantly he had 52 on the power play (compared to Jordan's 15 TOTAL since he put on an Islanders uni).

If Palmeiri even remotely comes close to that I would take him over Eberle alone just for his man-advantage numbers.

Kyle for 3/15 or 4/18 playing on that top line with Barzal and Lee- I would take over Jordan's remaining 3/16.5 seven days a week and twice on Sunday..

First off, thank you for your service Leddy. He was a great soldier for NYI, however I am glad the era is over and his cap hit is off the books as NYI needs that space elsewhere…anyway revising a post of mine from the mainboard

Seattle taking Leddy was not necessarily a guarantee in my eyes. NYI will likely bury Panik in the minors and since Detroit retained 50% of Panik’s cap hit NYI will be able to bury all but 250k of his cap hit. To guarantee shedding Leddy’s cap hit for a 2nd round pick (keep him mind Lamoriello has traded high picks every deadline he’s been here so he needs to recoup picks somewhere) for 250K of cap in return is excellent work by Lamoriello.

Hell, Panik may end up being a potential depth option under a Barrt Trotz’ scheme as well. He has size…
