Proposal: Leafs-Wild Blockbuster Idea

TO MIN: Kadri + Kapanen(RFA) + Zaitsev

TO TOR: Spurgeon + Staal(UFA) + Greenway

Minnesota gets 2 prime time top 6 forwards - Kadri has proven to be capable of 30 goals and 60-65 points with adequate ice time. Kapanen is just now coming into his own, has 30 goal upside, plays both special teams and will require a new contract after the season is done. Zaitsev, while a cap dump, is completely serviceable on the right side behind Dumba.

Leafs go All-In for the Cup while doing some housekeeping for next season's cap budget and beyond. Staal takes Kadri's spot down the middle as a rental for these playoffs only. Next season, Nylander would be given a full time gig at centre. Spurgeon would be a perfect compliment to Rielly, shoots right and has 1 year left on his contract after this year. Greenway is a work in progress as a power forward yet the Leafs have nothing like him on the roster or in the AHL. Additionally, the Leafs already have his brother in the system as a D prospect.

Leafs shouldn’t be interested in moving Kadri unless they are getting an equally productive player on a similar contract. Someone willing to move a player in those parameters is pretty unlikely.

I could see where maybe that would be mutually beneficial. However the Leafs are filled to the brim with puck movers. Maybe they want to go all out in terms of that. However. They’re going to be rough on the cap as is. Blowing a hole in 3/4c with very little working cap room and not much in the system to fill in could be pretty problematic.

You obviously don't know about Spurgeon, so why say anything? He is a superb defender, as well as being a capable offensive player.

Oh, and this trade is bad value for the Wild.

FWIW, Greenway is going to be really good. He is a unique player who is going to take time, but he will ve a big part of Wilds retool.

Your valuations are off. Kadri has more value with three years left on his contract. He's shown he can be a 30 goal 2C in the right situation. Kapanen is and will be better than Greenway. Greenway has value because he's a power forward but Kapanen brings much more to the table.

Thats rediculous. Kapanen could be traded straight up for Sturgeon...hes that good. And Kadri better than greenway by a country mile and so is kapanen. Wild fans can stay out of a playoff race with their putrid offence all they want.
