The leafs should absolutely be willing to go after Tavares if he goes ufa. They have a trade chip in kadri and can probably get a good defenseman for him. They are also in a good position to start selling some of their draft picks to put together a competitive team.

If the Leafs get Tavares that is more reason to keep Kadri, not trade him.

ignoring that you're wrong, this doesn't even make logical sense. Are you saying that there are more Leafs fans than non-Leafs fans?

There are more Leaf fans than fans of any one other team. There are nowhere near as many “pro-team” posters for any other team besides Toronto.

If there really is an anti-Leafs bias on HF, would you care to explain why a much larger portion of HF posters considered Patrick Marleau a HOFer right after he signed with Toronto?

People will come in here and say "So is every other team!!!"... Well.. MOST other teams cannot Match what the Leafs can offer!

I'm not saying Tavares will sign here, but the Leafs can put in a very competitive bid.

1) We CAN afford paying him >11 mil
2) We CAN compete for the Stanley Cup sooner rather than later
3) Tavares moves back home close to his childhood friends and family
4) Leafs can hire Tavares for life similar to Dougie Gilmour and Wendel Clark
5) Tavares wouldn't have to shoulder the bulk of the responsibility, we have other stars here too
6) Signing Tavares would not effect our ability to sign our other star players
7) Tavares already has a relationship with our Coach and probably has a good idea on what this team is about
8) Johnny would make a killing off of commercial / advertisments

No other team in the NHL can offer ALL of these things to JT

Kings offer the chance to hang out with Zlatan and get BFF with Ryan Reynolds, cant beat that, Canada, California and Zlatan...

I'd keep Kadri and roll with Matthews Tavares Kadri down the middle that's about as good as it gets for center depth

I honestly cannot stand when people say things like "that doesn't solve their needs!" and "what about the defence!" and "How can they sign player X"

If you can add a franchise center for nothing but cap-space, you do it and figure out the rest later.
But imagine how many backup goaltenders you could get for the price of JT.

so you don't understand the difference between being the largest fanbase and Leafs support being the general consensus of the site. Got it

If you want to see anti-Leaf bias, look up the poll asking HF "Will the Leafs make the playoffs ONCE during Babcock's contract"

laughable that so much of HF thought in 8!!!!! years the Leafs wouldn't make it ONCE

Bobby Mack came out today and said the Leafs are preparing several creative proposals for Tavares if he hits UFA.

Gotta think one idea is a 1 year max deal followed by an 8 year extension as soon as he's eligible.

Bat Bobby Mack said there are several creative proposals for Tavares so what else do you think they might offer?

Impossible for the trade with zero back to other team.

Tavares is worth many skin colour.

Personally I don't think the Leafs need Tavares. Offense was not their problem last year it was defense. Get Freddy some damn help so he doesn't keep breaking down when you need him the most.

Crazy thought. Maybe....just maybe because he played in San Jose it was never much of conversation before he signed with Toronto and in the end his body of work....yes in San Jose would more then likely make him a hall of famer regardless. I am not quite sure what this has to do with you thinking there isn't a vocal group of posters that dump on everything Leaf related?

If the Leafs get creative maybe the Islanders can get creative next year and give Matthews and Marner 4 years deals

Genuinely curious, but is this not kind of tampering?? Why doesn’t every team who really wants someone just feed it through the media that they’re willing to pony up X amount of dollars IF he hits FA?
Option 1 - Sign Tavares.

Option 2 - Throw out rumors about intense interest to increase the price for any other team that might be interested.

If they sign him then they will absolutely need to move one of Nylander or Marner. Nothing wrong with that though, maybe they can get a defender with one of them.

You disrespect Bobby Mac if you think he reports things for “clicks”.

I just saw that he was the source, this of course makes my original statement about clicks, although a true in principle, incorrect in this case. All hail the bobfather

You could swap "creative" with "unrealistic but will get a lot of clicks".

JT is going to get paid whatever he wants already and there is no benefit to him signing a 1 year deal.

Tor already has 2 incredible top 6 centers, with 2 more elite young wingers, 3 of the 4 who are about to get seriously paid. Its not happening
Bobby Mac doesn't do that. Maybe Eklund you'd have a point.

This website in a nutshell..

Bobby Mac says Matthews/Marner waiting til next year to sign - HF: Wow, trouble in Leaf fan. If Bob Mac says it you know there is substance

Bobby Mac says Leafs preparing to offer JT contract - HF: Stop dreaming Leaf fans, just trying to get clicks LOL
This.
If it's bad news for the Leafs, it's 100% true. If it was be good news it's impossible.

And would the Isles "get creative" with every other team that is interested in Tavares or just exclusively with the Leafs? Seems like that could get expensive and pretty damaging for the Isles.

Why not focus on defense instead?

Defense isn't limited to just the position. Great proof of that is Marc Beregon, one of the best defensive players in the game and he's a center. Conversely take JVR he is one the of the worst forwards in his own zone.

So a guy like Tavares gives you 3 really good offensive forwards (Matthew's and Kadri) while all 3 can be trusted in their own end..tough to score when 3 out of 4 lines have selke candidate centers.

What if the Leafs sign him for 7x3.5 but then he gets a bunch of endorsements to make over $20 million a year, the same deal they gave Stamkos.

Why would a player do that when you can make 12M$ elsewhere without all the bullshit that endorsing stuff comes with? Seems like a lot of extra work.

Most Leafs fans would rather add Tavares than Doughty.

Center depth is so much more important than D, i.e the last 3 cups awarded to teams with multiple elite centers but arguably meh dmen
