A Spezza type deal, and that's easily seeable. However done he might be, you put him in a contending situation(I know, I know, it's Toronto), limited minutes, right role, you might be able to squeeze something out of him for a year on the cheap.

While it’s easy to laugh at the Leafs for wanting to ice the most over the hill 4th line ever (aren’t they interest in Jumbo too?)...considering some of the dreck that was being iced in the bottom 6 last season, even Wayne Simmonds’ zombie carcass (at close to league minimum) would represent something of an upgrade so there is logic to this.

Simmonds playing half the games as 13th/14th forward might have something to give. couldn't be much less impactful then Clifford was in his short tenure.

I'd like to see Brooks get a shot at 4th line duty

If it's a million or less I say go for it. Maybe Simmonds was able to use all this down time to heal up and train to have a decent season as a bottom 6 forward.

Tyler Ennis was never any good. Simmonds is at least a has been but terrible at this point. I'd cry if extended with the Sabres.

My concern would be he and Spezza on the same line would be a very slow line.

He would have to beat out two of:

Tavares, Matthews, Nylander, Marner
Spezza, Robertson, Hyman, Johnsson, Mikheyev, Sandin

to get a spot on 2nd PP, so I am not sure I see it happening.
