Interesting backstory on our top pick from the National Post:

Frederik Gauthier was planning to go to Harvard. He was going to play hockey for the Crimson and study math, sciences and psychology and get an Ivy League education all for free.

But then the phone rang and his mom said a “Sidney†was on the line.
Sidney was no girl. It was Sidney Crosby, who was calling to tell Gauthier to maybe forget Harvard and forget getting an Ivy League education and instead come play for the Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. And because it was Crosby, who also played for Rimouski years earlier before going on to become one of the best players in the NHL, Gauthier listened.

“He told me how great it was when he was there,†said Gauthier. “I can say that he was right.â€

Indeed, it looks like he made the right decision.

Same thing happens every year. People here need anything to complain about. Complaining that the Leafs passed on Paajarvi and took Kadri and then last year with Rielly. Doesn't matter who it is, people here will find something wrong.

Maybe we can trade Gauthier for Lucic.

Why are you throwing Lucic into this? Gauthier is nothing like him.

The jury is out on this kid. However his interviews were very odd.

1) didnt watch hockey
2) didnt have a favorite team
3) was going to pick between football and hockey, and chose hockey
4) wasnt sure if he wanted to go to Harvard or QMJHL

Didnt sound like he tried to get to where he was, almost as if it fell into his hands... Either that or this is just a kid that succeeds at w.e he does. Seemed like hockey was just an element to his life, not his entire life like a lot of these players. Hopefully he is motivated and doesnt suddenly decide to take up knitting.

21st overall.

Thanks for the mediocre pick Sid :handclap:

We have been picking high for years. When is the last time we picked 21st. Why do you think their is a lottery in top 5? Because after the top 5 or in a deep draft(2013) the top 10, you don't get elite players. Gauthier looks to be a 3RD LINE C Who MAYBE COULD be a NUMBER 2C.That's what you get at 21, if you are lucky.

Or maybe he truly loves football as well as hockey, but his love for hockey won out.

It's not odd to have a passion for more than one sport. Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago Cubs was an All-American football player for Notre Dame, but picked baseball over the NFL and is now a solid pitcher in the Cubs rotation. Doesn't mean baseball just fell into his lap, it means he loved it so much, he was willing to give up NFL football for it.

No player makes it to the first round of the NHL draft without a passion for hockey.

The fact that he had the option of going to Harvard on a scholarship and study science speaks positively to his IQ and character.

says who?

Toronto Star.

In Bergevin's post draft scrum he also specifically hinted trying to move up to no avail. Would have been nice to get a 2nd out of Montreal.

Had the Leafs moved down, they were rumored to like Emille Poirier and Ryan Hartman.

If Hockey doesn't work out for him, he can thank Sydney for screwing him over.

Dr. Hibbert: [chuckles] Your playing days are over, my friend. But, you can always fall back on your degree in...

[reads chart]

Dr. Hibbert: Communications!? Oh, dear Lord!

Ouch.

Ivy league education vs. junior hockey. A good chance to get drafted either way, and he chose junior.

Hope he has better hockey sense than common sense.

From the sounds of it he is going to be in the NHL at least for a bit and can afford himself a better education than most regardless.

Uhhh he went first round that pretty much guarantees a decent paying AHL job and probably time in the NHL. From the looks of him he will be NHL ready in 2yrs tops.

If you were selected by the habs or sens, would you honestly stand infront of a gazillion media members and be like 'My favourite team is the Leafs since I was 5 years old, I've watched them since I was a kid and my favourite player is Mats Sundin, I'm so dissapointed they didn't pick me, etc etc etc.'

Its Obv Fredrick's favourite team is the Habs, he's not going to say that publicly like that dumb Adam Erne kid and be hopeful about getting drafted by them. The Toronto Media would kill him if Fredrick expressed any love to Montreal.
