I think that Toronto obviously loses value-wise (I'd even say brutally) but NJD shouldn't do that because it doesn't make them instant contenders and Matthews is controlled for only 4 years.

I’d rather bet on Hughes being almost as good as Matthews especially at the cost of what could possibly be another top 10 pick in a defense heavy draft (what were lacking).

Matthews for Jack Hughes, a 1st + 11 million or so in cap space

That cap space could be used to sign Pietrangelo or Hall...

So, if you're the Leafs, are you turning down an offer of Hughes, Pietrangelo, and a 1st rd pick for Matthews?

It's uniquely horrible for both teams because the leafs get absolutely robbed value wise and barring other moves Matthews likely makes the Devils a consistent bubble team stuck in mediocrity.

Jersey gets the best player in the deal but Toronto also gets a very good player in Hughes and they can sign Pietrangelo and possibly Hall on a shorten contract, go for the cup and still have the young core intact in the long run.
