Not at all, but based on his rookie season at least he’s not close to Matthews and another dart in the first round isn’t going to close the gap.

It's a gamble for sure but Hughes also still only 19. He may never get to Matthews level but I think he will have a solid career. Trading Matthews would sting but this trade will bring them a lot closer to winning the cup given they are able to land AP and Hall of course.

Why would the Leafs do this? They are not rebuilding and in this trade they give away the best player in the deal today and very likely in the future too.

And Leafs fans are the ones who get bashed for bad proposals. Shesh.

I swear some fans would have turned down 19 year old McDavid for the 18 year old first overall because they'd get an extra year. Ridiculous. NJ would take Matthews and run for that price.

But think of all the FA's you could sign then.....

Toronto trades

Matthews

Jersey gets the best player in the deal but Toronto also gets a very good player in Hughes and they can sign Pietrangelo and possibly Hall on a shorten contract, go for the cup and still have the young core intact in the long run.

So who says no? Maybe the Devils add a little.
Trading 50 dollars plus a scratch ticket for 500.

Who says no? Everyone.

Leafs are are in their window to win now. Why would they deal for futures and young soon to be star when they have their super star in his prime?
Devils window is a couple years away. Why would they deal much needed futures and a young soon to be star for a player in their prime, when the team is not in their prime yet?

You're kidding yourself if you think the Devils don't say yes. Even if their window is couple years away Matthews would still be in this prime by time they're ready. The only reason Toronto would be remotely interested if they think Matthews bolts in 4 years time.

And why shouldn’t the Devils have that same concern? We could have Hughes for possibly 8 or more years plus a possible lottery pick next year or Matthews for 4 years.

Maybe we’re ready to contend in two years so then we have Matthews for a whopping 2 years. It’s simple math.

Pointless now as I'm pretty sure Toronto is done on the blue line with Bogosian coming on board .... But I wouldn't touch Hughes until he proves he can even come close to living up to his draft position. And maybe not even then.

I didn't like him when he was drafted - nothing personal at all, just he's too small for center and seems to rely on having lots of space to work - while Matthews is the real deal, no waiting to see if he develops with our fingers-crossed. He's big, starting to get more physical, was a few games away from potting 50 and he was the best Leaf in their 5-game play-in round.

Of the Big 4 forwards he'd be the last to go - that is if/until he decides not to extend his current deal. But that is a future discussion.

(The "lottery protected" condition was the clincher. Took this deal from "over my dead body" to the abyss of absurdity.)
