Daniel Giradi

- 29 years young
- From Welland, ON
- Played in Guelph during his OHL tenure
- Oh, he is a right handed shot defenceman too

If we can free up space I would definitely target him, he's the #2 d-man people have been talking about. Let's hope NYR has a bad year so he wants to leave.

Gunnar+Liles or cap equivalent would have to leave though, we wont have much if any space after resigning the guys we need(i.e Bolland, Kule, Gardiner)

100% agree.

I don't mind skimping on the 4th line. But a good 3rd line is crucial. They're usually your best defensive forwards, and if you have one that can also produce offense, that's worth its weight in gold.

Agreed, One line teams get shut down in the playoffs if you have a great shutdown line. This is the worry.

I love having 3 lines able to beat a team on any given night.

I know people hate this, but Bozak's salary of a measley 4.2, and JVR's 4.25 balance out Kessel's 8.0 the next 5 years.

Kadri at 2.9 is good for now with Lupul's 5.25

Now if we can get Bolland and Raymond signed to reasonable terms, we may have 3 lines I would term as 1, 2A and 2B.

Got to like that instead of having all our firepower concentrated on one line.

Nice position for Toronto to be in. Struggling to clean up their game with a sparkling record. Hard to complain with the results.

Thank God for coach Carlyle, he won't let these guys take it for granted, they need to improve a lot and reduce the shots and chances for the opposition, with the return of the players that are out this team should start gelling and will be OK.

There isn't a team in the league that is happy with their play so far I am sure. Even Patrick Roy was moaning about someone on his team the other day and he hasn't lost. So I guess the haters can have a field day with this one while the Leafs continue to win over their teams.

so if bolland continues to play at the pace he is at he will have a career year. He has to this point out played bozie and will/should finish with more points. Do you think he will re-sign for any less then what bozie signed for?

Personally, IF he was interested in signing here. I would make it a priority to make the caproom to get him here.

For the 2014-2015 season, we'll likely see Kulemin (I think its between him/McClement/Bolland, and I think he's the oddman out) gone, replaced by a cheap option like Leivo. We'll likely see one of Bernier/Reimer gone, since Reimer will be an RFA. To fit Girardi, we'd pretty much HAVE to move a defenceman, likely one of Franson or Gardiner. Plus the cap will be going up.

So yea, I think we could get the capspace together for him. He should really only be getting around ~3.5M (similar to Scuderi as a comparison). But then again, free agent frenzy has seen some crazy contracts kicked around before.

We have 27M tied up with:
Kessel
Lupul
Clarkson
JVR
Bozak

This is our core at the moment.

For the next 5 years, assuming the cap goes up to 70M at some point, that leaves 43M to sign the rest of our team. We have to identify who our key players to lock them up. Bolland and Phaneuf are guys we need to lock up. That's going to cost us conservatively another 10-11M

Leaving 32-33 M to sign the rest of the team. No one said becoming a contender was easy. We are going to have to say goodbye to someone. Kadri is a guy I can see storms rising when he is re-upped.

That's the point of this thread, who do we let go, who do we keep. Cap world makes this a debate in one's mind and heart.

we don't have a 1c, and there is no guarantee we can sign one at a reasonable price. i'd resign kadri (3-4.5 mil similar to duchene's last contract) as a priority, bernier (3-6 depending on the season) franson (3.5-4), gardiner (2-3.5), mcclement (1-2), kulemin (3-4), reimer (3)

that's about 22 mil.

we actually don't have anyone to replace kuli; i don't know why everyone wants to trade him. ashton, d'amigo, abbott, broll, biggs, devane are nowhere even near his level. he's the fastest two way forward on our team who can sub on second line and has shown 30 goal potential with the right linemates, but should make 20 on second line these days.

on d, we could use percy, finn, reilly, blacker, macwilliam, etc. to shore up the gap from d4-6. at least 2 of them should be usable and could replace ranger. it's hard to replace fraser, but we've been doing fine so far. fraser might be worth 1-1.5 million.

so minus:

gunnar
ranger
bodie
liles

keep

bolland
phaneuf
bernier
kadri
mcclem
kuli
franson
gardiner

lol ya Girardi would be the ideal partner for Phaneuf but we wont be able to afford him unless we get rid of Franson or Gardiner... Plus NYR wont lose this guy.

Early predictions:

Bolland- re-signed
Kulemin- gone :(
McClement- re-signed
Raymond- gone
Ashton- re-signed
Bodie- gone
Phaneuf- re-signed
Franson- re-signed/traded
Gardiner-re-signed/traded
Fraser-gone
Ranger-gone
Reimer-traded

I would say
Bolland resighned
Kulemin resigned UNLESS he chooses to walk since we have hardly any euros anymore
McClement resigned unless he wants long term.
Bodie Gone
Ashton resigned, two way deal, one year probably similar to Joe Colbourne
Dion Resigned under 7 mill.
Gardiner traded or resigned.
Franson Resigned ~4-5mil
Fraser resigned under 2 mil.
Ranger gone/traded for something at the deadline
Reimer signed or traded in the off season.

^ I'm pretty sure Ranger is staying. He is starting to look more like a #3 and Randy is depending on him quite extensively. We can sign him for cheap, and have a very elite D core.

I really can't see us acquiring any FA defenceman and rather bringing in our prospects. There is probably a higher probability of Gunnarsson and Percy et al replacing him.

Maybe we'll see a core of...

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Rielly - Franson
Fraser - Ranger
Percy

Bolland is a must sign IMO. Way too important to the core of the team to lose him. Moves will have to be made but that's the nature of the business, we'll be fine as long as we keep replenishing the cupboards year after year with draft picks and drafting well. Already looks like Leivo, Percy, Connor Brown, Gauthier, Verhaghe(sp.) are the next group to groom.

it's funny, Rangers fans can't get wait to get rid of the "overrrated" Girardi. Pens fans can't wait to get rid of the "overrated" Orpik......yet leaf fans are dying to trade quality assets for these types of guys......even after we've improved so much since dumping the likes of Komisarek and schenn.

we never learn.

You're right about Orpik, Pens fans hate him.

However I've read a lot of threads on NY's board about G, and they're still really high on him.

But in the end, it doesn't matter what fans think. It's what GMs think.

If Phaneuf is really asking for 7-8 Years at $7+ mil then you can forget it....he is getting traded, end of story!

Based on what Vanek just got, Nonis is too smart to sign Phaneuf to an albatross contract that will pay him Top 3 salary (for a defenseman).

Ill take that kind of return for Phaneuf ANY day. How about Myers + 1st (NYI) + 2nd ? :yo:

ok ok, i kid

Big Burkie made some doozie moves but getting JVR for Luke Schenn could be almost on the level of Gilmour for Leeman.

Seriously Burke has to be one of the best trading GMs in Leaf history. Too bad his free agent signings and re-signings were terrible.

Schenn for JVR
Beauchemin for Lupul and Gardiner
Stajan and scraps for Phaneuf

Unbelievable. Wish he didn't have to go the way he did but he helped us a lot. Love Nonis too though.

JVR - Kadri - Kessel
Leivo - Bolland - Lupul
_____ - Bozak - Clarkson
_____ - _____ - ______

Gunnar - Gardiner
Rielly - Franson
_____ - _____

Bernier
______

That's my core.

I let Phaneuf walk because I don't think spending 7+ million a year during his 29-36 year old seasons is efficient. For those who can't wrap their heads around opportunity and players stepping up, well it happens every year.

I trade Reimer for the best package and roll with the guy who can rebound at an acceptable rate for a franchise goalie.

I sign Dave Bolland to the Bozak contract. $4.2 by five years.
Franson at $5 by five years.
Gardiner at $4 by seven years.

Question:
What would you say is the difference between getting Girardi and getting Komisarek back in 2009? I'm not saying that Girardi is over-rated or anything, but I'm trying to see how he fits into the Leafs aside from being a right-handed defensive specialist #2 defenseman.

He's no Komisarek, but it would be an awful addition. We need dynamic D, not somebody that panics with the puck.

If there is some sort of internal cap in place, we'd probably see Bozak, Franson, and Gunnarsson traded before Phaneuf is allowed to walk. You're not letting a two-way #1D for a $500k cap upgrade. It's just outright insane!
