So were Mikko Lehtonen’s but look what happened there.
Similar situation but it’s hard to break into a winning lineup when nobody is getting injured. Depth 7th defenseman will be similar to what Menell can expect. More offensive than a Hutton or Gravel so more insurance for a top 4 d man going down with an injury, but Menell plays with enough sandpaper to be a #6 if needed.

He will most definitely get some games in for us next season on the 6th pair.

How’s this guys game?

Probably few experts on the Leaf board. The Minnesota trade thread on this was predictable (anywhere from "meh" to "Guerin knows nothing about asset management") but the pre trade Menell discussions there were a bit more interesting. Last November their board ranked him as the #9 prospect prior to his KHL season. FWIW the Leafs #9 was Abruzzese/Anderson.

I think folks are fixating too much on that one KHL season.

The AHL seasons are impressive enough. His game translated very quickly to the pros and when he moved to the K there was no learning curve, he just got it. By age 22 he was everything we wanted Duszak and Hollowell to be and he got better. Still just a big maybe but maybe he is more Rafalski than Kostka.

Rafalski skated as well as anyone who ever played \D. That is a tough comparison.

I was thinking of him as another undrafted guy that didn't get a whiff of the NHL until he was 26. An undersized Euro league stud one year and a regular player on the Stanley Cup champs a year later. Just go with it

The word is Guerin got vindictive with this guy who has p.p/ q.b type of potential. Does it mean we can let Reilly walk to another team for $7 Million? No.

He kind of looks like Jared Spurgeon from the random Youtube clips I've happened upon, compact toolsy little RHD who looks adept at making a play and I guess not surpringly he's a Minnesota guy who grew up watching Spurgeon.

Woodbury’s Brennan Menell fulfills lifelong dream with Wild – Twin Cities

Been trying to research him and watch as much footage as possible. Definitely seems like a guy that'll be competing for that right side, bottom pairing gig. Seems he has the potential to man a 2nd PP unit. Looks like there is a little bit of grit/aggression in his game if push comes to shove. Seems to move around the ice well. As a defenceman at the age of 24, he may be at that stage of his development to grab a spot out of camp. Out of Menell, Sandin, and Liljegren though...I personally think Liljegren fits our needs better as he is the bigger frame and imo the most defensively conscious out of the 3. Another PK D would be nice, and if we don't bring in help, I think Liljegren could do that for us. 2nd PP could be easily be handled by Muzzin, Brodie, or Dermott

dont get attached. unless they trade kerfoot , mik or dermott, they wont be able to carry a 7th dman
and mennell will get claimed off waivers.

Menell could be claimed considering he's that much coveted RHD. Conversely, he's only played in five NHL games to this point and would have a 400K salary if playing in the AHL.
