That quote is in the context of Holl already having been protected
They protected a bunch of guys and Kracken told Dubas they were interested in Kerfoot. You guys need to get over this. Dubas said what he said.

No, they protected Kerfoot. Geez man, go look at Dubas literally saying in order to protect Kerfoot, they had to expose McCann. So it cost us Hallinder and a pick to keep Kerfoot so I don't know what you are getting on about.

Kerfoot was left unprotected in the expansion draft.

He was not protected. Seattle was free to choose him.

Holl was protected. Seattle could not choose him.

Holl was protected, Kerfoot was left exposed so Seattle could have picked him. Dubas meant that by acquiring McCann who was more attractive to Seattle they were indirectly incentivizing Seattle to not take Kerfoot.

They could have acquired McCann and then protected both him and Kerfoot and left Holl exposed, but they chose to protect Holl.

Dubas said and I quote "in order to keep Kerfoot, we had to expose McCann".
Kracken weren't taking Holl, they were going to take Kerfoot.

All this "had to protect Holl" is complete bullshit started by some poster earlier on in the thread.

you need to re-listen to what was said.

the conversation was started with the one assistant talking about protecting the top-4 dmen, and everyone agreeing that it was always going to be 4+4 protected, not 7+3.

Then Shanahan states that they could trade Hallander for McCann, and essentially keep Kerfoot for the price of Hallander, as Seattle would obviously choose McCann (and if they chose kerfoot, then the leafs would happily keep mccann).

I hope you can read. Show me where it says Kerfoot. :skeptic:

The only thing is that we don't definitively know if Seattle would have selected Kerfoot from Toronto if they were also able to select McCann from Pittsburgh. Toronto obviously made that trade with Pittsburgh in order to ensure they'd have one of the two forwards.

They didnt protect Kerfoot, they protected Holl. As in, even if they wanted too the Kraken could not select Holl. They then left Kerfoot exposed, along with McCann, so that Kraken had to pick one over the other.

You literally are on the internet posting this information, when you could have used the internet to get that same information to get your facts straight.

He was protected by having JM exposed.

he wasn't protected.

but what you seem to be saying is that the Leafs knew McCann was the more valuable asset, and that Seattle would choose him ahead of Kerfoot.

The fact that Kerfoot was left exposed destroys your narrative. Completely. They didn't care who they lost. They just wanted a replacement for who they lost. If Seattle took Kerfoot, they would have McCann. Period.

Time to move on.

I didn't think Mennell had a bad showing.. but Liljegren was a clear step ahead. I got Connor Carrick vibes from Mennell. I think he could carve out a career as a decent bottom pairing guy given the right situation. I think he might get claimed.

Hope he clears - think he could be useful if they run into a few injuries. I think he can play in the NHL - the Leafs just have a great 1-7 D core with Liljegren - who I expect will start with the Marlies to ensure he plays.

I don't think he is going to clear. He would look good on any team needing a 3rd pairing RHD and 2nd PP unit specialist.

Other than Buffalo, I don't think he gets claimed.

Most teams have guys like him.
