So we had 4 guys people were concerned about losing to waivers, Engvall, Brooks, Anderson and Menell.

Anderson and Menell both cleared and one of Engvall/Brooks is likely going to be on the roster, so worst case we lose one. They won't but could/should waive Simmonds and not have to worry about losing anyone.

At the end of last year, I would have agreed. However, I have kind of liked what I have seen. He will have faster linemates this year, and I am keen to see if he can have a decent rebound season. I think what really killed him and Joe both was that they never should have played together.

Simmer will likely be in and out. If we lose Amadio to keep him, I can live with that. Engvall should be on the team, though (in my opinion).

I have a feeling him clearing today will payoff later this season.

The Leafs AHL veteran defense depth is better than previous seasons. So much so that a trade deadline deal to fortify the defense depth may not be necessary this time around.

They are going to waive Spezza and Spezza will say, I will retire if I get claim again.

That doesn't help us fit under the cap.

Nope. Its going to be Brooks that gets waived and Engvall will likely be the extra on the roster. Then they will bring up Liljegren once they go on a road trip 2 weeks in, sending down someonelike Engvall if there isn't an injury by then.

The only question is whether they waive Engvall on the last day as well because if he clears they have a month to bring him up and down, and they may feel he has a better chance of clearing the last day before the season starts rather than 2 weeks in.

watching menell made me feel like i was kind of watching kaberle again

just such a poised player, especially in those power plays. dude looked like a total vet with how he managed those.
Watching Menell reminded me more of watching Stuart Percy. Nice skater who looked very promising, but never made the jump and put it together.

I hated percy with a passion so I'd suggest you're wrong there.

I considered him to be the defensive version of John Pohl. Or a less successful colaiacovo.

It's been a long time. I can't say you're wrong -- that's just what came to my mind watching Menell, is all.

Stuart Percy couldn't skate at all. That's what stopped him from making the NHL despite having decent skills and grit.

You must be thinking of someone else. Blacker maybe?

Excellent (though predictable) news.

Fingers crossed he makes things interesting showing he's absolutely above playing with the Marlies

I don't think it helps much, but you could waive him and save a tiny bit of cap on days he doesn't play? Although I've always wondered why every team wouldn't just do this paper transaction automatically for everyone waiver exempt. Cap space is cap space, and even if you don't need it, it supposedly has value.

Not a cap expert, but I think the Leafs can carry 22 players without any kind of manipulation which I'm fully expecting them to do

This line up puts them over the cap, but I think Lilije has 400k of bonsues so we can go over the cap by some amount as well.

I'd be surprised if that KHL rumor was true. Unless he had been essentially told by the Leafs he wouldn't get much call up action
