Make my day.
Stecher might save it tho, if he turns out to be a star, jimbo needs some credit.

Jim just happened to be lucky enough to be sitting in the Canucks GMs chair when Stecher decided to come home to BC. A rock could made the decision to sign him, no risk 2-way ELC for a highly ranked college UFA - definition of a no brain required hockey decision, any GM in that position would have signed him.

Anyway OT. Would have liked to as Joulevi get some games vs men in Finland, would be just as good if not better for his development. Hopefully when he goes back to London he uses the opportunity to focus on his offensive side.

Yeah. Everyone knew he was a good prospect and every fan here was keen on signing him. The guy grew up as a lifelong Canuck fan and basically fell into our laps. This wasn't some case of great scouting. Every fan on this message board could have and would have made that deal.

Props, on the other hand, to whoever identified Carcone.

We will see if it works out but credit should be given to Benning for leaving open contract slots and then getting the deal done with Stecher. You can say it's not great scouting, but you still need to correctly identify these guys. One can go after the top college free agents and come up with nothing. Remember Kellan Laine and our attempt at signing Laganiere?

Yes, getting him signed here means nothing, such bizarre logic.

People think that just because Stecher is from the area it was a slam dunk signing. These things are always way more complicated than that.
Stecher himself said it was a very tough call and there were a number of teams he was considering. His agent and he thought he had a good chance of cracking the Canucks defense. Opportunity and team fit played a bigger role than the home town according to him.
Looks like a very solid pick up. You can see why so many teams were after him.

it is definitely bizarre yet you guys used that exact same argument with Hamhuis.

The big difference with Hamhuis is that you are committing an asset to Hamhuis (cap) and evaluating how he fits with your team needs etc. It is a much bigger decision because it has real ramifications.

Signing a highly rated prospect is a entirely different. It costs you nothing and the risk is nothing more than an AHL spot/contract slot. There are no ramifications if it doesn't work out.

Yeah I'll give him credit for it

He was a top NCAA UFA who announced to the hockey world that he's "always dreamed of playing in Vancouver"

Even Jimbo couldn't **** that up

HF logic... No GM should ever receive ANY credit for signing a hometown player.

It all depends. If a GM persuades a promising prospect to sign that otherwise wouldn't have signed, then that GM should be given credit. If a promising prospect is going to sign regardless of the actions of the GM, which appears to be the case here, then to praise that GM for signing that player is absurd. Any praise in the latter scenario necessarily implies that GMs should be praised for not making poor decisions.

As others have mentioned, this isn't some vendetta against Benning, this kind of reaction occurred here when Gillis sign Hamhuis and Garrisson as well.

So credit to Benning for decimating the Canucks' defense to allow the Justin Schultz logic to kick in! :thumbu:
