If his career ends up being very similar to Hamhuis' are we happy with that as a 5OA pick?

How much does he project to be like Hamhuis? Maybe a little bit more of an offensive ceiling?

Major disappointment. Hamhuis is not the 5th best of any draft. Not even close.

Juol should of gone 6 AFTER Tkachuck. Well be feeling this for over a decade

So if we don't draft a Keith or Subban its a failure of a pick, makes sense for this fanbase.

Personally I would take him over hamhuis today

Juolevi looks the kind of guy who could play in the league for 15 years....and if his career lands him somewhere between Oliver Ekman Larsson and Christian Erhoff, I'd be happy.

We might, but we won't know either way for at least a few years. Juolevi looks promising though and if he turns out to be Hamhuis I'd be very happy with that.

Maybe. But like you said, Juolevi looks promising. Its not like we missed out on a pick in that area. We still got a damn good player. And man we needed a D to build around. I think for at 5, he was the right pick.

It's obvious his stats were heavily boosted by marner and dvorak. We will NOT regret this decision. Glorified grinder.

Funnily enough, the same can be said for Juloevi. It's going to be interesting, that's for sure.

If Juolevi puts up identical point production and +/-, and Tkachuk only scores 90 points, would that be considered a weighted increase in production for Juolevi?

You could make the argument hes in the top 5 from his own draft...

Kovalchuk
Spezza
Koivu
Sharp
Hamhuis
(these arent necessarily in order)

are IMO the top 5 from the 2001 draft...

Go look at the 2001 entry draft, the year Hamhuis was selected.

There are barely 5 players still in league, let alone better than Hamhuis.

If Juolevi becomes the next Hamhuis that is a resoundingly successful pick.

Hamhuis has played the most games and has the 18th most points out of everyone in that draft year. 289 players.

Defensemen and centers are more valuable than wingers.

If Columbus didn't think that, they would have taken JP at #3 over dubois.

Barring the winger being a high end guy like Laine or JP, you normally take the D ahead.

Is tkachuk going to be a pain to play against like a kesler or Perry? Yes.

But, this team needed a big minute defenseman. What will separate OJ from being a top level guy is his offense. He will be counted on more this year on London to help the offense since Dvorak graduates to the pros and possibly marner who is too good for the ohl sticks in the NHL. See if he can develop that part of his fame further.

I see OJ as a better hamhuis. Thinking more in terms of Vlasic in SJ if he doesn't pick up the offense.

Smart player,so not complaining there. Canucks are too thin in the back end to ignore restocking the position.

Difference here is that Juolevi put in a similarly dominating performance the World Junior Championships as one of youngest d-men in the history of the tournament...apparently the best d-man on the ice most games....According to Jimbo it was his performance at the WJC which convinced them to draft him, rather than what he did with the Knights.

Im not really on either side of the Tkachuk/Juolevi debate.

But using this young stars tournament as a way to say "we should have drafted player X over player Y" is an extremely weak argument.

Make my day.
We should have drafted a bruiser, soft D are useless. Joulevi won't punish anyone, nobody going to look up when he's around.

For sure. Looking forward to the pre-season.
