Matthews now has a better point per game, assist per game, and point per game than Laine. It's hilarious how anybody could think Laine is better than Matthews given that Laine isn't even better at the only thing he does well: score goals.
We'll assume you meant PPG and GPG as opposed to PPG twice. I don't think any non-Jets/Finn fans or non-Leafs haters would truly hang their hat on Laine being objectively hands down better than Matthews. As a neutral fan myself I see the appeal in the "pure goal scorer" potential that Laine has and some of his snipes are so filthy it's hard not to get excited about him. Then again, you make a fair point in that statistically he isn't a better goal scorer than Matthews overall, and is blown away by Matthews at even strength. When Matthews gets the benefit of the prime PP minutes too it's hard not to see him outdoing Laine in goalscoring as well, along with the thus-far proven superiority in playmaking and overall PPG. Throw in Matthew's defensive superiority and center position...like I said I haven't ran into too many knowledgeable third-party fans of hockey that would take Laine over Matthews unless they are Leafs haters.
A little more on topic, goal scorers like Laine can be streaky but it could work out nicely for the Jets if this cold streak ends right around playoff time and he gets hot again. Then again, if he doesn't, he's kind of a non-factor out there...kind of reminds me of Patches in some ways (in terms of their contributions, Laine definitely has a nicer shot)
