This next three weeks will be a never ending barrage of these non specific totally obvious statements from “insiders”.

I like reading hockey news as much as the next guy but aside from the trades themselves the build up to the deadline is the worst.

He got rid of negative value contracts by paying picks and essentially got Karlsson for free or close to it.

It was worth the gamble at the cost but he has not worked here. Coaching hasn’t helped, but Mike Sullivan is czar and will never get fired so might as well retain and get another sucker to take on Karlsson.

It won’t happen because it would be admitting he made a mistake, but it would be best for the organization.

Dubas is completely spineless and would rather let the season fail than live with the bad pr after moving guentzel.

Paid him lots.

Secondly no longer has Shanahan telling him what he can or can't do.

Hierarchy in Toronto

Owners
Shanahan
Dubas

Pittsburgh

Owners
Dubas
The shanny excuse is a fanboy media concotion to excuse his horrific track record as leafs gm.

Everybody except Sens fans, what is Dubas even doing lol. The only pieces that have value won't be moved ? (with the exception to Guentzal)

Ehh, there were plenty of people stuck on stupid and thinking EK was still a valuable player.

There were Wings fans wanting to trade from him late spring/early summer. Completely illogical given his age and the fact that, at $11.5M he's an abysmal contract to have on your books while Seider/Raymond both need extensions. And with suitable retention to make his contract worth it, he was going to require significant futures.

Granlund had negative value and reports were teams wanted a 1st to take him. CDS had little value as a mediocre backup, Petry had little to negative value due to his contract and Rutta had little to negative value again due to his contract.

They moved all those guys plus the 1st it was reported to cost to get rid of Granlund but plus a 2nd to get rid of more dead cap and a nothing prospect to get EK retained. Thats essentially getting him for free or very cheap.

That isn’t opinion.

And after all that, youll end up without a 1st and 2nd, plus end up finishing worse than last year. Would have been better to just sit tight and do nothing lol.

Quite the mental gymnastics to say they got Karlsson for free lol. The trade set your franchise back even more, it did not move them forward.

The funny part is that Granlund and Rutta have been awesome for the Sharks and definitely have some value when we inevitably flip them at either this year’s or next year’s trade deadline. Meanwhile, Penguins fans are convincing themselves that they’ll be able to recoup a 1st round pick for Karlsson again… sorry, it’s not happening a third time.

A smart team will give up a late 1st and B prospect for Marcus Pettersson. He’s the best defenseman on that team every time I watch.

I didn’t say it was a good move. To suggest they paid up for him is laughable. Go back and look at the trade thread at people’s opinions of the return.

They should have just paid to get out of those contracts and used the cap space for not Erik Karlsson. The team would be better off.

This exactly how many Pens fans see this. The picks were just offers to dump all the garbage players. I still have hope in Karlsson after Sullivan's gone (if ever).

Rust has a full NMC. Doubt he is moved.
I don't understand how everyone sees that and thinks he automatically isnt going anywhere.

I can't imagine rust would say no if a team with a wide open window to win asked him to waive his no trade clause.

It's not like Arizona the ducks or some other bottom feeder is going to try to trade for him or anything.

Like if vancover, who has his ex coach, ex gm, ex assistant gm, and like what 6 ex teammates were to try to trade for him or Detroit given he's a Michigan boy, or the avs who are always competitive, I can imagine him saying yes. He's never really come off as an "I'm retiring a penguin" level guy. Winning is fun, pens aren't winning anything this year and potentially for the foreseeable Future.

If the Penguins had Petry, Rutta and Granlund instead of Karlsson, they'd be even worse this year. Bringing up the EK deal as if it was a mistake is laughable. Unless EK falls off a cliff in the next few years, they'll be able to get the 1st and 2nd back for him when they shop him in like 2 years.

They should be worse this year. They should be rebuilding. This still goes back to when Rutherford stepped down. And rumors were they were going to trade Letang. They should have.

Plenty fans had seen this coming, especially Detroit, San Jose, and Chicago fans
