Marleau who is older and even less effective also got a 3rd and which could become a 2nd if he wins the cup.

If MB plan is to resign him maybe he should of added condition that would make WSH less likely to consider resign him... MB doesn’t seem to put much attention to detail or trying to squeeze out all the value out of each trade... adding condition to improve return based on Kovalchuk resigning or winning the cup might almost be a waste of time but why wouldn’t you try to cover all possibilities... You can please Kovalchuk and still protect / maximize return if things don’t go had planned...

Doubtful the Caps are in the running for his services next year. They're only $10 million below the cap for next year with sixteen players signed. One of those FAs is Holtby. I suppose Kovalchuk could sign for league minimum again, but that seems highly unlikely.

MB doesn't seem to put much attention to detail but still ends up with 14 draft picks this summer...

We cannot argue whether he puts much attention to details or not but having Kovalchuk signed on July 1st can backfire on us too. So I'm not sure if thats Bergy's top priority. Let's not be emotional with players. Kovy is 36. His time in Montreal was spectacular. He is going to be 37 soon. Let's chill a bit.

I’ll give you that having 14 picks is a good haul.....my concern is that “this management groups” record drafting is abysmal, sub-par , disappointing, all the above.

I don't think resigning him would be the worst thing in the world but we all knew this would be short

Kinda surprised he was allowed to say there were better offers on the table. Although I guess it would've come out at some point regardless. But I guess the whole thing was done with a lot of respect and gentlemen's agreements with mtl giving a big role and kovy taking a league minimum 2-way contract and playing his heart out, earning them a free pick, so it's fitting. If it helps with possibly signing him next year then it could be a good move

I just noticed that the Capitals also own the Coyotes 3rd round pick. Couldn’t Bergevin ask for that pick instead of being stuck with essentially a 4th round pick with the Capitals one?

I think with all that retained salary it would have been a reasonable ask especially with teams giving a 2nd round picks for Kovalchuk.

About us signing him out of shear desperation, while enjoying the remnants of an elite player? Or, just getting a second for him?

The way he handled Kovalchuk make me think about how he handled Radulov and Markov.

I think that Bergevin learned from those lessons.

Because, he could've traded him for a 2nd without consulting Kovalchuk.

Honestly it's a win-win-win situation for everyone involved.

-Fans can't complain that their GM didn't offered a better offer than 3rd for Kovy
-Kovalchuk wants to win the cup. He said good words on MTL

-Bergevin was respectful and was able to salvage him.
-caps are happy that they got a "discount"

The only significant signing is Holtby which they might just let walk and just go with Samsonov... Even if it is unlikely it is a possibility getting the conditions base or sign or performance would have covered all the bases.

and based on what Kovi and MB said, there's heavy interest on him coming back next year. No guarantees. But the interest is there.

Sorry, Backstrom is 2.5M more next year.

They have 10M of space but a goalie and 2 d-men to sign.
There is about 5M needed for d-men.
Add 2M or 3M for a goalie.

You can bet a lot that Washington will not offer 3M to Kovalchuck.
They will sign McMichael before.

LMAO!!! that's it?
Its not like he's cousins? That dude was a 4th and full salary!! I think Kovy has a little more upside esp when you consider we retained salary and went down to trade him. Go Caps Go. I am on their team at this point because our team has been stuck in the mud for 10 years.

If by conditions, you mean a 3rd becomes a 2nd, then it wouldn't be able to be done because Washington doesn't have a 2nd. And they don't have a 3rd in 2021 to make it at least a conditional 3rd next year. So it was either a 3rd or possibly less.

I know they didn’t have a 2nd this year... it could have been 2021 or 4th or even a 7th... The point is that their is nothing... you squeeze everything you can than you add conditions if it doesn’t happen you didn’t lose anything if think the conditions kick in it even better...
Are Pit winning the cup maybe, but SJ will get a 2nd if they do ( Marleau not likely to play a big role if they do). They got the most they could (a 3rd) and than they added conditions where they could get more...

Habs cater to Kovalchuk by sending him to the Caps, to create enough goodwill that he’ll resign with the Canadiens in July. This move helps entice Romanov to join the Habs next year. Then Kovalchuk can mentor the young Russian in Montreal next season.

that is crazy if he could have gotten a 2nd round pick

More like stupid:madfire:

Not much difference between a late 2nd and a late 3rd and you willing to risk waiting that out? I support the move Bergevin made and it gives us better probability to get him signed in July. Might not work in the end but it's classy and this might go a long way to convincing others to come to Montreal.

55-61 vs 85-93. At that stage in the draft, every team's draft board is different. This is not worth getting upset or calling someone stupid. Habs have a lot of darts to throw at our draft board targets

Would have been cool for ovy to score 700 on a sweet feed from kovy. Hopefully they will be on the same line before long.

Kovi with Ovi or Kuznetsov will be lethal.

I don't think all three should play together as a line - maybe on the pp. But two of the three together is an incredible combination - and give them Wilson to wreck havoc.

The rich get richer.

their top two lines are

Ovi-Kuznetsov-Wilson
Vrana-Backstrom-Oshie

Kovy is luxury 3rd liner and PP specialist.

I'd experiment with:

Ovi-Backstrom-Wilson
Kovi-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Vrana-Eller-Haglin

Still I hope they get knocked out the first round, so that that 3rd we got is a mid 3rd.
