Still can't believe the rush to sign him. There isn't a single team that would've given him the contract the Oilers gave him.
A lot of times it seems the Oilers are trying to be smart and get ahead. They just aren't good enough to be trying to be ahead of the curve.

I get that they didn't want to risk losing him in UFA and were done with Talbot... But it really sounds like his small hot stretch was all the convincing they needed that he was the guy to sign.

He was still terrible last night. Oilers bailed him out for a change.

The initial deal was bad enough and any extension was going to facilitate a raise. It's truly amazing how bad the Oilers are at signings.

Again, if you're going to be intellectual honest about the OTL/SOLs, you split them as, half as wins and half loses, so it's more of 26.5 wins 20.5 losses, or if you have to 26 wins - 21 losses
A loss is a loss. You're not going to convince me that Koskinen's performance against the mighty Sens was anything more than a loss.

I feel like upper management have fallen farrrrrr behind on analytics compared to other teams. Chiarelli and Nicholson are dinosaurs. Most of these crazy roster moves/contracts wouldn't have happened out if they had a few competent statisticians guiding decisions. I feel like there isn't a whole lot of that going on with this organization.

The 31 thoughts podcast that came out a couple of days after the Chia firing had Friedman alluding that most teams have been quietly expanding thier analytics departments and that the Oilers were one of the few teams that weren't doing this

From everything Nicholson has been saying, the team plans on remaining in the stone age. They will shuffle a few deck chairs, but it's going to be obc controlled for sure. We will probably see more panic trades and signings in the future.

We aren't expanding anything other than Senior Management roles.

To be fair to Koskinen too, that's a 92 point pace.

Kind of mentioned this in the post game thread, but I'm very curious to see what Koskinen looks like next year.

He showed that he can play in the NHL and was at an elite level for a stretch of games.

The key for him now is working on his game. He needs to sit down and watch a lot of film. He needs to see why he is getting beat so easily at times. Woodley has explained a few things on Koskinen and if he's willing to do the work there is no reason why Koskinen can't at least be an average NHL starter next year.

It would be nice if he stayed in North America and practiced with some of his teammates. JP is still around right now, maybe the two of them work together? Gagner, Brodziak, Benning, Petrovic, all have some sort of ties to the City and are probably around for a good chunk. There are also a lot of other NHLers Boychuk, Parayko, Steel, Pysyk, Bouwmeester etc.. that you can get together and practice with.

The opportunity is there he just needs to take it.

Unless he magically gets a glove hand we know what he’ll look like next year. He’ll be a year older and slower and every guy in the league will shoot high

Just watched the movie Moneyball recently so this post resonates with me. Anyone see it?

If yes was I the only one getting Oiler vibes when Brad Pitt was at the meeting with all the pro scouts and they're spitting out all the baseball equivalents of character, hockey IQ, culture etc. So out of touch with the current game doing what worked 30 years ago.

The scouting report on Koskinen is that he will not be outworked as far as analyzing his game and making adjustments. He is committed to his craft and works to perfect it. Tough to change your game on the fly, but if that scouting report is true(and us laymen pretty much have to take the ppl in the know’s word for it) I would expect him to be better next year.

The crazy thing is when he first got here his glove hand was dynamite.

Now he can’t stop a beach ball if it’s going high glove

Haha, I was actually going to use the term moneyball in my post but changed the wording. The dinosaurs need to go. They're not going to be able to change at this point, so they need to accept that they haven't evolved with the modern game and step aside.

I'm sure Koski supporters are trying to frame this week as positive but Koski gave up 4 lol goals against the Kings who rarely ever score, and a couple against the Stars who also have some trouble scoring. Also 3 goal posts in the Dallas game. Koski seems to get the benefit of these more than any goalie here since Salo. He's running ordinary numbers plus getting extraordinary luck in a lot of games. Not even considering the several times his team mates pull a puck away from the goal line.

On what I've seen this goalie is pretty ordinary and weaknesses definitely scouted. Like I said they would be.
