This doesn't bode well for Martinez. If Muzzin can get 1 million from a good month, essentially, Martinez will get at least 1.2-1.4 if not more.

$1 million seems a little excessive with every dollar being more important this summer, unless Muzzin improves. As in, not a deer in the headlights in the defensive zone.

Rimer is a fine source. He's never really wrong. He's not a real big rumor monger.

To me A-Mart is and will be the better player. Muzzin is more flashy for both good and bad reasons (great shot, hand grenade passes in the D-zone).

A-Mart, IMO, is Darryl Sydor all over again (maybe not as skilled offensively) I think.

A-Mart is going to be miles better than Muzzin when all said in done. Put A-Mart in a system that allows defenseman to activate and you will see his true value.
The system is not going to change with Sutter so it probably would be the best for A-Mart if he moved on.

I'm afraid you're going to be right.

Muzzin hasn't even played that many games in the NHL. He needs to step up and be worthy of this choice.

Why is everyone so sure Martinez is gone? If DL gets better trade offers for Muzzin than Martinez I don't think he hesitates at all.

Agreed. So long, Martinez :( But cheers to a long career somewhere waaaayyyy back east!

Muzzin better keep growing/improving, because A-Mart was a personal favorite of mine :(

Yes. I'm expecting big things from Muzzin this year, though.

So we sign Muzz which i think was a good signing, we need some offensive from the left side and I feel he will get better. But we keep Ellerby and Shultz over Marts..... We'll have enough space if we waive both of them and sign Marts. What if Willie or anyone else goes down then Ellerby or Shultz will have to play. I rather have Marts in there.

I'd really rather see the two battle it out in training camp. Then the loser is kept as a number 7. And one of the two dumb ****s (Ellerby and Schultz) can be the 8th D, something I have been advocating all off season. If one of them establishes themselves as the #6 by the trade deadline, move the other one.

My scenario: Schultz is kept on as the eighth for his experience and Ellerby is sent to Manchester.

I actually view Muzzin as being more like Sydor with the hot passes and the shakiness when it comes to handling physical play, which is something both Sydor and Muzzin struggled with. Not exactly sure what happened with Martinez though, but he struggled to the point where the coaching staff lost faith in him, and his struggles were very evident. I can't forget that horrible game by him against Phoenix...

Agree to disagree I guess. By comparing A-Mart and Sydor, I was more meaning what Sydor was for the bulk of his career, not what he was the last 2-3 seasons in LA. Sydor was a solid top 3-4 D-man who could chip in on everything, solid citizen who really was underappreciated because he never really stood out. Like Stephane Robidas now in Dallas.

A-Mart is the same thing IMO. I think everyone was amazed that he wasn't on the ice for a goal against for the last 2+ rounds of the playoffs in our cup run. He just does his job, chips in a bit of offense and goes back to the bench.

Jake Muzzin is either going to be a poor man's Al MacInnis (and by poor, I mean very poor)- which is a good thing- or he'll be Jason Wooley/John Slaney. He's a boom or bust type who has a wicked shot and can put up points in the right situations.

Possible trading partners?

Lombardi and Rutherford have a good relationship and have struck a few deals together. Perhaps Carolina is a possible destination point for Martinez?

Carolina would make sense. Rutherford has gone on record (I believe it was in reference to trading for Bobby Sangiuetti) that he doesn't like to use draft picks on D-men very often at the draft because they often take longer to develop and he'd rather grab another teams castoffs that he feels are ready to assume a bigger role.

Overpaid by at least $75K.

Agreed.

Why is everyone so sure Martinez is gone? If DL gets better trade offers for Muzzin than Martinez I don't think he hesitates at all.

While I agree, odds are if DL was going to trade Muzzin it would have been before he went through the entire process of getting a contract done. You don't often see guys sign contracts then get dealt the same off-season, and DL will need to send someone packing between now and camp in all likelihood, especially if Mitchell is expected back.

So we sign Muzz which i think was a good signing, we need some offensive from the left side and I feel he will get better. If you waive both of them, then we're short a depth D-man in the event Mitchell doesn't come back.

My scenario: Schultz is pissed about how he was treated, eats his wheaties, goes "oh yeah, I'm 6'6" and 350" and turns into Chara.

"I'll show YOU!!!" Goes on to win the Norris.

Perhaps Schultz had the appeal of a clearance item to Dean? You don't need it, but it's so damn cheap!?

I'm sure Martinez doesn't want to be a 7th, just-in-case defenseman. Especially if he's looking at anything north of what Muzzin just signed for.

There's only so many backup plans a team can have. If Mitchell is ready to go, and he gets hurt during the season, then the Kings just have to figure out a way to make it work. They did last year.

For that money, I hope he learns to get the puck out of the zone better this year

He has the big shot and had the highest S% of any defenseman on the team (including DD8 & VV26). He makes questionable outlet passes, but he's physical enough and responsible enough to play in 62 of 66 games last season including playoffs. He's important on the PP with that shot too. As a rookie defenseman to have been on a 13- goal pace for 82-games is impressive. Muzzin needs to be better in his own zone, but he wasn't an escort service.

Having said that, a 73% raise for a guy like him is pretty much unheard of. I wasn't expecting him to get that kinda deal. Of course I wasn't expecting you to get the raise you got recently either but it turns out you have pictures of your boss with farm animals. Who knew? :naughty:

Rumor has us having TL signed to a similar deal.

Lewis on this deal I'd be fine with. While Lewis MAY be a 4th liner for us this year, he really plays the right way and can play the PK as well. Muzzin is definitely overpaid. Not by much, but he is.
