I actually view Muzzin as being more like Sydor with the hot passes and the shakiness when it comes to handling physical play, which is something both Sydor and Muzzin struggled with. Not exactly sure what happened with Martinez though, but he struggled to the point where the coaching staff lost faith in him, and his struggles were very evident. I can't forget that horrible game by him against Phoenix...
Agree to disagree I guess. By comparing A-Mart and Sydor, I was more meaning what Sydor was for the bulk of his career, not what he was the last 2-3 seasons in LA. Sydor was a solid top 3-4 D-man who could chip in on everything, solid citizen who really was underappreciated because he never really stood out. Like Stephane Robidas now in Dallas.
A-Mart is the same thing IMO. I think everyone was amazed that he wasn't on the ice for a goal against for the last 2+ rounds of the playoffs in our cup run. He just does his job, chips in a bit of offense and goes back to the bench.
Jake Muzzin is either going to be a poor man's Al MacInnis (and by poor, I mean very poor)- which is a good thing- or he'll be Jason Wooley/John Slaney. He's a boom or bust type who has a wicked shot and can put up points in the right situations.
Possible trading partners?

Lombardi and Rutherford have a good relationship and have struck a few deals together. Perhaps Carolina is a possible destination point for Martinez?
Carolina would make sense. Rutherford has gone on record (I believe it was in reference to trading for Bobby Sangiuetti) that he doesn't like to use draft picks on D-men very often at the draft because they often take longer to develop and he'd rather grab another teams castoffs that he feels are ready to assume a bigger role.
Overpaid by at least $75K.
Agreed.
Why is everyone so sure Martinez is gone? If DL gets better trade offers for Muzzin than Martinez I don't think he hesitates at all.
While I agree, odds are if DL was going to trade Muzzin it would have been before he went through the entire process of getting a contract done. You don't often see guys sign contracts then get dealt the same off-season, and DL will need to send someone packing between now and camp in all likelihood, especially if Mitchell is expected back.
So we sign Muzz which i think was a good signing, we need some offensive from the left side and I feel he will get better. But we keep Ellerby and Shultz over Marts.....
We'll have enough space if we waive both of them and sign Marts. What if Willie or anyone else goes down then Ellerby or Shultz will have to play. I rather have Marts in there.
If you waive both of them, then we're short a depth D-man in the event Mitchell doesn't come back.
