Yes, NYR has been much more successful developing middle 6 forwards than stars at that position.

That's part of why we kept going outside the org (Nash, Gaborik, Richards, Jagr, MSL) to get top end talent. The argument at that point from the more cynical people here was that you can't build a team full of good role players and then just plug UFA/trade stars into the top offensive roles and see success.

But that's kind of exactly what we just did again when we went out and signed Panarin, traded for Trouba, and gave Zibanejad his extension.

This is such a narrow-minded view. Just because someone was a good player, doesn't mean they're good at developing other players.

The same is true the other way around. Tanner Glass and Jed Ortmeyer's skills on the ice are not really indicative of their ability to help others develop. That doesn't mean they'er good at it per se, but this notion that a 4th liner by definition cannot develop top prospects is flawed.

Those high-motor never-take-a-shift-off guys are exactly who everyone should want influencing our kids.
