Arizona is probably trying to acquire as many draft picks as possible to do a hard rebuild. Chychrun SHOULD be part of that rebuild, but maybe they don't figure he's in the plans as by the time they are ready to compete, he'll be in his later 20s and on his third contract.

DeBrincat actually makes sense as he's up for a contract renewal and he could be looking for a massive payday.
Aren't they always trying a hard rebuild? It's perpetual at this point.

No, Chayka was just incompetent. Armstrong is doing his own rebuild now and he's only been there for like two years.

What are Fiala's options if he gets his 5.1 million QO but refuses to sign it? If the Wild don't trade him and he refuses to sign his QO, what are his options? He can't sign with another team so sit out the year? That of course is not in the best interest of the Wild as they would lose him for nothing when he becomes UFA so the chances of him not getting traded and not signing his QO are pretty slim.

Pretty sure it'd go to arbitration and he'd get a 1 year award of an amount that we couldn't afford (probably $7M+ on a 1 year deal).

Fiala's options would be:
-Arbitration
-Sign the QO for MN
-Sign and OS somewhere else

If I read the 27 or 7 rule correctly. He'll be a UFA after 1 more NHL season played, but is 2 years away by age (July b-day). So sitting out the year just loses him money. He won't get $5m+ playing overseas and MN would still retain his rights for the next season due to giving him a QO.

Thanks. So if he chooses arbitration, he might get a 1-year or 2-year option and higher AAV than $5.1M and if he refuses to sign that then he either sits out (he won't) or hope he gets traded or get an offer sheet (unlikely) from another team.

He'll get a much higher arbitration award than his $5.1m QO. If arbitration (binding arrangement from a neutral 3rd party) goes to the hearing then both sides are locked in at the number awarded.

The player doesn't really have a choice except to take the offer.

The team (Wild) has a choice to either sign the player or let him as a FA once the hearing is over. This option is needed because the NHL does have a hard salary cap and the cap space just might not be there for the team to give out a big contract.

If Fiala elects to go to arbitration, the Wild get to choose 1 or 2 years?

Maybe?

Here is the capfriendly arbitration page Arbitration Filings - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

  • Player Elected Salary Arbitration eligibility:
    • Player must meet the Pro Years of Professional Experience requirement [CBA Section 12.1(a)]
    • Player electing for Arbitration must do so by making a written request [CBA 12.2]
    • Player must notify the Central Registry, NHLPA & Team by 5:00pm EST on July 5th [CBA 12.2]
      • For the 2021-22 off-season, due to the extended season schedule (originally intended for the Olympics), the deadline is July 17, 2022 at 5:00pm ET
  • Arbitration Ruling:
    • Player & Club can settle on a deal at any point prior to the commencement of the hearing (Prior to the 2020 MOU, a settlement could be made at any point prior to the arbitration decision)
    • Once the hearing has taken place, the Salary Arbitration decision must be issued by email within 48 hrs of the closing [CBA 12.9(n)(i)]
    • Arbitration awards can only be 1 or 2 years in length [CBA 12.10(a)&(b)]
    • The party (Player or Club) who did not elect for Arbitration decides on the awarded term [CBA 12.10(a)&(b)]
    • Players who are in their final year Restricted Free Agency are only entitled to a 1 year term.
    • Club cannot walk away from a Club elected Arbitration Settlement [CBA 12.10(e)]
    • Player elected Arbitration Settlements of 1 year and greater than $4,538,958, Club can walk away from the awarded salary, making the player a UFA [CBA 12.10(a)]
    • Player elected Arbitration Settlements of 2 years and greater than $4,538,958, Club can walk away from the second (2nd) year of the awarded salary, making the player a UFA at the end of year 1 [CBA 12.10(b)]

I left out the club elected info. My reading of it boiled down to this line: Player can only be subject to one (1) Club elected Salary Arbitration in his career [CBA 12.3(c)]. Also they can't walk away if the Wild elect arbitration and the team is so cap tight it makes it almost unworkable.
