What do people expect Phil's return to be? If you expect anything better than Zucker, it's pretty obvious that you're completely out of touch.

He's got tons of warts, a $7 million cap hit, chooses where he goes, is 32, and is an uncoachable, temperamental, complimentary piece. We're not exactly trying to trade a prime Geno here.

I assume they're cherry pickers and casual fans. Helps with the logic.

Can't assume anyone who watches this team night in and night out think Kessel holds more value - especially when coupled with the aforementioned NMC, age, and temperament (backed by stints in Boston and Toronto before us).

Kessel's an iron man, has been top 5 in scoring at RW over the last 2 years, is 4th among all players in playoff points since 2016, and has a cap hit far lower than most of his offensive comparables. For a guy who's temperamental and uncoachable, he's sure been a gigantic part of our success.

If Kessel doesn't return something better than Zucker, we're better off hanging onto him and complementing him properly.

"And" rather than "or". His one-dimensional game contributes to the problem
No, I’m saying you can be a top-10 winger on a good contract and not be a problem in the room and still not be worth a lot. Wingers hold the lowest trade value in the league

Or one-dimensional wingers don’t hold massive value

Its more that in hockey moreso than any other sports HOW a player plays or a coach coaches is more important to the braintrusts that run teams than actual results.

Us getting Kessel then opening up the offense and winning was no coincidence, much like us going back to trying to embracing size, grit and defensive defensemanship, or whatever bonehead neanderthals call it, in our supplemental players and having subpar results the past two years is probably related too...

Kessel will never play good old boy hockey. He wants to run and gun. GMs hate run and gun cause it places a premium on finding and developing talent... its easier to build a cookie cutter team that colors within the lines... phil has no place there, but neither does letang or malkin or even Sid many times

If numbers told the whole story, teams would have offered better deals for him. Clearly, that isn't the case. Kessel is past it and his contract is a cap problem.

I'm not terribly worried about how other teams value Kessel.

I'm only concerned about what he has brought and can bring to this team.

You can be a Top 10 winger on the Penguins but what does that mean to teams like the Wild? Different talent levels surround. It's especially a problem when you have a one-dimensional game. It's especially a problem when you're 32, on the decline, and have a one-dimensional game. It's especially a problem when you have 3 years left on your $8m cap hit per season contract, are 32, are on the decline, and have a one-dimensional game.

Babcock should serve as a cautionary tale of getting to enameled with a coach’s past success.

That dude is just Dan Bylsma but with the Canadian hype machine behind him. Actually Bylsma has won a playoff series more recently than Babcock.

Bylsma has won Stanley Cup more recently than Babcock as well :D

Especially when they design their limited no trade clause lists to effectively become full no trade clauses.

Kessel just put up the two most productive seasons of his career.

What exactly is declining about his game?

His defense? Ok...

Or Kessel's NMC means the Pens don't have much leverage since it's not like JR has the ability to have 30 teams outbidding one another.

Denial ain't a river in Egypt. The dude just put up a -19 season. He's selling out for offense. It's a sign of decline. Plus he's turning 32 in October.
