It is funny those stories come out and i for one am happy to hear, as i hated his talent or lack thereof but always respected his professionalism.
That is why i was surprised , when our idiot ex d coach , whom i despise, JJ Daingnault, tried to paint a huge negative on alzners attitude. To me it was always a loser coach, trying to blame someone for his failures.

Why sulk and pout anyways as they are good people, good people accept what is and keep going. Just because the NHL days are gone won't turn people in to demons. Getting millions to play a a game that I enjoy, would be happier than a pig in shit.

If I were Alzner,I'd be so embarrassed with how much I sucked and feel guilty about stealing so much money that I'd terminate my contract immediately. The guy must have no pride.

You'd walk away from over 10 million dollars (this year + 2 more years)? To put it in perspective, before signing in Montreal he made 15-20M (depending on how many bonuses he hit) over a 9 year span. This is going to set the man up for the rest of his life.

I think the title of the thread is self explanatory.

Are we buying this guy out? At the end of this year? At the end of next year? Not even worth it anymore to buy him out anyways because we're not even spending to the Cap? Let him play out his remaining years in Laval?

This is the worst ever free agent signings by the Habs. This guy will more than likely only have played 91 games for the Montreal Canadiens after signing a 5 year 23+ million contract.

I wouldn't want him back in Laval even though he's been a good leader. He's simply not good enough and taking someone else's spot. We have some solid young defensemen coming in like Harris, Norlinder and Romanov. I feel like Ouellet is a perfect veteran for Laval so no need for Alzner.

The buyout will be spread over 4 years, with 2020-21 being pretty expensive, but the other 3 years not so bad. I think they should buy him out this June. Get it over with. Free the roster spot

We have plenty of cap space now

Depth chart on D next year

1. Weber
2. Petry
3. Chiarot
4. Mete
5. Scandella
6. Fleury
7. Kulak
==
1. Ouellet
2. Olofsson
3. Romanov
4. Brook
5. Juulsen
6. Harris
7. Leskinen

If someone leaves (Petry? or Scandella UFA) Bergevin will likely sign a new defense (or trade for one). As you can see, Alzner has no spot, we already have 14 guys, that's not even counting any AHL deals. There is also Norlinder who could be signed

Why would you want to buy him out? We have unused cap space hanging. It’s not like we are planning on using that money anytime soon.

Buying him out after this season makes no sense. Buy him out before the expansion draft year is what happens. Or he retires cause he doesn't want to ride the bus in the AHL any more. Lets look at some of the details of his current situation

- As of July this summer when he gets his $1.5M bonus, he earned $36.92M (before taxes) for his entire NHL career.
- As of July this summer when he gets his $1.5M bonus, he will be paid $18.125M out of his 5 year $23.125M contract.
- $5M more to be paid after July of this summer. However, he won't be paid the whole amount cause he will be bought out in the summer of 21. That will reduce that to $3.83M

So how much does he want to ride the bus in the AHL for one more year. Is that worth $3.83M to him? Probably but who knows.... it would be 3 years in a row and that can get to you at 31/32 when you played NHL in your 20's.

I dunno about that. Did it even hurt us?

Lucic was a horrible signing in comparison - because Oilers were at or near the cap for years and unable to add much, and a contract like Lucic hurt them. Considering how we've not been close to the cap for so long - i'd say the contract never even hurt us.

As long as we have cap, I don’t see the point of buying him out. Yes, he is eating a roster spot, but unless we’re in a situation where he’s taking a contract spot away from somebody (as opposed to taking a playing spot), just leave him be.

Just because it didn't hurt us, it doesn't mean it wasn't the worst ever free agent signing.

It's silly to buy him out when the buyout cap hit would be similar to what it is when he is in the AHL. Buy out in June of 21 makes more sense. And hey, he might retire cause he don't want to ride the AHL bus for 3 years in a row. Habs should send him to the ECHL cause he is not really doing that well in the AHL either. Make his life miserable cause he is not living up to the contract.
