I feel like this gets said once a July about a team. I hope it comes true this time.

TOR got Nylander, Gauthier, Johnsson and Holl as RFA now. Do they got the draft picks to make a play on Nylander?

Would need 1st, 2nd, 3rd for a ~6M paper, add another 1st to that if going above 7M or so. Not a move a rebuilding team should make.

To all those saying "Darling and Mrazek have been good goalies in the past" as a reason that the Canes might still be a conteder. Just some of the stats to back that up:

If you look at Mrazek + Darling's absolute best years in the NHL:

YearGPWOTLPoints
Darling2016-172718541
Mrazek2015-164927660
7645101
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
So if BOTH goalies replicate the absolute best seasons they have ever had in their NHL careers then the Canes are working with a ~109 point pace in a 82 game season.

Here is the same analysis based on last year's stats alone:

YearGPW OTLPoints
Darling2017-184013733
Mrazek2017-183314634
73271367
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Which is a ~67 point pace over an 82 game season... Hence the apprehension some have.

edited for OTL.

The Mrazek/Darling tandem is a little less "high risk/high reward" than it is "blackout drunk riverboat gambler playing with money he stole from a bail bondsman 5 miles up river". It's truly possible that Darling pulls it back together after an offseason of serious workouts and a shrink. It's possible that Mrazek flips that switch back on.

Or...

One thing I can say for sure about next year's team is that they will be something to behold in whatever direction they wind up going. Boring will not be a word anyone is ever gonna attach to this team.

Getting 2 1st from the Isles for Nylander seems like a dream scenario for Toronto.

Those are lotto picks.. I can’t see them doing that.

You don't offer sheet Nylander. You wait one year after they have already paid Nylander and offer sheet Matthews. He may not like playing second fiddle to JT, already may have had enough of Toronto, may not want to be limited to JT's $11M per AAV, and is worth the picks it would take. Maybe.

I would totally be down for us to offersheet Matthews.

My feeling at this point is to chalk it up to an owner who is more a tightwad than a free spender:

1. $10,000,000. That is what several teams are spending on players above the Canes. Do you know what a difference that makes? That is where players like Tavares and Marleau magically appear for a team.

2. General Manager. We let RF go (I am not sure if he is still owed under his contract) and stuck with Waddell and Dudley, who were already on payroll. So this is a net savings. There was also the talk of lowballing prospective GMs causing them to pull out of consideration. At least one of them then went on to another team.

3. Coach. Instead of considering others out there who may have been costly, we went with Rod as a rookie who I would imagine is not getting top dollar for that role. He was already on payroll and doesn't need the money like many professional coaches do, so he is likely a cheaper option.

4. Goalies. Cap hit is currently $5.6 million for the tandem which is lower than many other goalie tandems, let alone for a bona fide starter. Signing Mrazek for $1.5 seems like a cheap reclamation project like we always hope for. The team is clearly not going to take the $ hit of buying out Darling.

5. Free Agency. Basically spent nothing compared to what many teams were doing. Were we going to pay the bonus to ROR to get him? Hell no! Did we spend to the cap as was promised to bring in some of that top talent? Obviously not.

It's his money to do what he likes, but all of these categories strike me as looking to get away with the lowest amount possible. With that said, I do hope it all comes together next year.

1: Aho, Turbo, and others will change our cap situation, we have a lot of talent on ELC and RFA contracts.
2: Didn’t like the Waddell hire either.
3: Rod loves this team, I’m ok with giving him a couple years.
4: Should we have overpaid again for another risky trial?
5: Teams regret UFA signings all the time, Ladd and Lucic recently. It’s better to sign and extend to know what you got.

Offer sheets don't just automatically get signed because you offer a bunch of money. Matthews would have to want to be here. We're not signing any RFAs for the same reason we're not signing UFAs, we're not a destination. And I don't get the impression too many players are going to want to use their leverage to force a move to the Islanders for the next few seasons, either. It takes two to offer sheet, and a player would have to be pretty upset at his current team to sign one. Not only do offer sheets create bad feelings between teams, but also between team and player who signs one. I don't get the impression Matthews and/or Nylander are ready to go nuclear on Dubas when he just brought Tavares home.

In the absence of further movement, Carolina will go into next season with 2 of the Top 10 PP goal scorers among defensemen over the past 4 seasons. For a team that hasn’t had a Top 10 PP since 07-08, that’s exciting. Add in Svechnikov and Necas, replacing Skinner and Ryan, and you can start to see the umbrella of both PP units coming together.

Teravainen – Hamilton – Aho
Necas – Faulk – Svechnikov

There's a playmaker, a threat to score in the middle and a threat to score from the wall on each unit. That leaves some combination of Skinner, Staal, Rask, Williams, Ferland and Zykov to play in between and below the dots.

Skinner could have a monster year if he gets away from the right half wall and plays to the side of the net and below the goal line like Crosby does. His hands in tight are very good; he doesn’t have the one-timer to score from distance consistently in that situation.

You'd have to be very sure you were competing for the cup. Four firsts that aren't in the upper twenties would kill you. I wouldn't do it unless our goalie situation was figured out.

Challenge — without including our #2 overall picks of Staal and Svechnikov, identify any 4-year stretch of Hurricanes first rounders who we wouldn’t trade for Matthews and walk away laughing.

Technically I think you get a choice over the next five Drafts' time which four 1sts you will give.

I also want to read that Trade Board thread about Nylander and the Canes draft picks compensation and how they are done badly in Toronto in that deal.
