I think a good question is: why did San Jose do this?
They're in win-now mode and Dahlen doesn't do much for their club in the next year or two. Karlsson is a recent draft pick so it's weird that they'd give up on him so quickly for another future piece that doesn't contribute to their club right now.

Based on..... he can’t skate.

Granted plenty of talented prospects never made it based on their poor skating, but it's more likely that Dahlen becomes better at it than Karlsson suddenly becoming smarter and more skilled.

Yeah that's why he's intriguing. And his time in SuperElit last season leading his team in points. Just surprised he isn't producing better in SWE-2 this season after an impressive draft year

I like that we got a young prospect for Dahlen before his value was nil, but I don't love the target.

We could have sold Tanev, Hansen, Burrows, Bieksa, Vrbata, Miller, Kesler, Hamhius at peak value if Benning was aggressive enough. Instead he sat on his hands and let their value diminsh or let them walk for nothing.

This is literally the definition of "a trade just to make a trade." In fact, we ended up with a worse player by all metrics, but Dahlen had basically no value so whatever.

Basically both Benning trades that were so applauded in Goldy and Dahlen have resulted to nothing.

They were fine moves that didn't pan out. That's ok. Despite being a net zero, they were still probably 2 of Bennings best moves. I'm fine with moving on from Dahlen too.

Dahlen will probably outproduce Karlsson at every level, they're different types of players. Karlsson does have more of an NHL style game though that may translate to bottom 6 success if he doesn't develop into a scorer.

Maybe Dahlen was getting top 6 minutes and Karlsson is getting bottom 6 minutes with worse linemates.
