I'm impartial to both goalies. Both can go, or both can stay, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that both will be long gone by the time this team (if ever) is truly competing. These guys are here for the now, not for the future, that much is pretty well certain.
I just gawked at the sheer amount of hate towards Bernier while he was in his slump. I know that when Riemer was having a hard time a just a season or two back, the negativity towards him was pretty sharp on the internet. But more recently, with Bernier - wow. That negativity seemed to have quadroupled towards him. Absurd statements like he should be banished from the NHL, or sent to the minors forever, you name it - I was left scratching my head over these comments and wondered about the mindset of who was making those comments. It's why internet commentators will never be taken seriously in this world, ever (just like this post will never be taken seriously either lol). Too many unstable ideas. Bernier was in a slump just like all other NHL players. Is every NHL'er who goes through their inevitable slump (because they will ALL go through many slumps) be subjected to thousands of unstable, ridiculous comments? I guess. When they're riding high, no one comments. When they're riding low, the haters come out at night.
It's funny because just a week ago I posted a comment here stating that just wait- Bernier will turn this slump around, win 5 or 6 in a row and compete for the starters job again all while Riemer hits the skids lol. Well -I already have (almost) the first half of that prediction correct.. now it's time for James to lose 3 or 4 in a row and round' she goes again
Seriously though - why won't management deal with this once and for all. Just designate the starter and designate the backup. If they don't want to do that, then move one or both of them out. This is causing a lot of stress and uncertainty for both of these guys, and has been for years. It's too long. There's no doubt that it's affecting their game. If they win, they think, "great, I won- but am I playing next game?". If they lose, they think "oh well, at least I'll be backup". This removes a level of competition from their heads. If one of them is the starter, then they'll play like one. Patrick Roy. Ed Belfour. Curtis Joseph. But if they don't know if they're #1 or #2, then - they'll inadvertently play like that. Glen Healey. Trevor Kidd. Scott Clemmensen. They knew they were #2 guys, they knew their spot. Riemer/Bernier: if they win, ok, if not, ok as well - they'll drop to #2. They NEED to know where they're at so they can play like it. They're both good guys, at least give them the decency to officially designate them. Deal with it, make the decisions, and stamp it.
