These numbers are pretty screwered. For one, the average sv % has been going up for many seasons, so those that played numerous games since 2005-2006 have lower sv % than today's sv %. It would be better if you compared adjusted sv % or even gaa %.

While also playing lesser competition and having more rest days.

Reimer, while he has missed time to injury or being in the minors, has rarely ever been used as a backup or even platoon goalie against softer competition, and in the 2 seasons he was, his numbers were worse, not better.

So... he's a backup? bottom third in save% and one of lowest games played there too despite being his team's #1 from 2010-11 to 2012-13. Thanks for this brilliant insight.

Another great game by Bernier. Starting the year off with a near perfect game versus a great team.

I just love how he "battles" and how he "competes". ;)

Look I'm as happy as the next guy at Bernies game tonight and I know you guys aren't trying to rub anyone the wrong way, but save the cheering for when he's strung together a great ten game performance. If you make comments like this after every win it'll just make people who hate Bernier hate him even more. Analyze his game, of course! Just know that people won't be able to separate the player from his supporters. And besides, pefromances like tonight will speak for themselves.

MISSING:

Hundreds of Bernier haters. If found, please return to the forums.

;)

Jokes aside - good job yet again by Jonathan. Great to see that the slump is behind him. We all knew he was coming out of it eventually. All players go through it. He's starting up the "who's the #1 goalie" controversy yet again.

To add to that, the Leafs are starting to turn a corner here I feel. This year is still a writeoff, but we can see that there's finally something positive happening. After years and years of false starts - could this finally be the turning point?

He has the last two games, he wasn't prior.

All those excuses prior were a joke. Tonight, he got 1 post and 2 missed empty nets, I don't call him lucky for getting good bounces because you make your luck the same way you make your own bad luck which he was doing all year prior to very recently. I never hated the guy, I just hated all the the "bad bounces" crap when he was playing terrible.

His game has changed, and I mean in the focus department. The most noticable thing I've seen is that when the puck goes behind the net and the leafs are in postition to cleanly get the puck he used to take his eyes off the puck, now he tracks it until the leafs player touches it.
Time will tell, but ive noticed this in his games since the call up except the blow out.

Great game from Bernier. But if you had a choice you wouldn't start him because he was so bad recently. Good if he gets some value, the trade deadline isn't far.

I think its appropriate to cheer for a player when he has a great performance. It's the same whenever Kadri or Rielly plays great, their thread is littered with praises for them. If peole take my comment the wrong way then it's clearly their problem. I'm just happy about his performance after the season he's had so far.

Same for me, I bash Bernier only because of the rediculous Bernier fan club. Wonder how Bernier will play today.

Right, I mean it's not like Reimer has an obnoxious following that refuses to give him any kind of blame for anything.

I'm impartial to both goalies. Both can go, or both can stay, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that both will be long gone by the time this team (if ever) is truly competing. These guys are here for the now, not for the future, that much is pretty well certain.

I just gawked at the sheer amount of hate towards Bernier while he was in his slump. I know that when Riemer was having a hard time a just a season or two back, the negativity towards him was pretty sharp on the internet. But more recently, with Bernier - wow. That negativity seemed to have quadroupled towards him. Absurd statements like he should be banished from the NHL, or sent to the minors forever, you name it - I was left scratching my head over these comments and wondered about the mindset of who was making those comments. It's why internet commentators will never be taken seriously in this world, ever (just like this post will never be taken seriously either lol). Too many unstable ideas. Bernier was in a slump just like all other NHL players. Is every NHL'er who goes through their inevitable slump (because they will ALL go through many slumps) be subjected to thousands of unstable, ridiculous comments? I guess. When they're riding high, no one comments. When they're riding low, the haters come out at night.

It's funny because just a week ago I posted a comment here stating that just wait- Bernier will turn this slump around, win 5 or 6 in a row and compete for the starters job again all while Riemer hits the skids lol. Well -I already have (almost) the first half of that prediction correct.. now it's time for James to lose 3 or 4 in a row and round' she goes again ;)

Seriously though - why won't management deal with this once and for all. Just designate the starter and designate the backup. If they don't want to do that, then move one or both of them out. This is causing a lot of stress and uncertainty for both of these guys, and has been for years. It's too long. There's no doubt that it's affecting their game. If they win, they think, "great, I won- but am I playing next game?". If they lose, they think "oh well, at least I'll be backup". This removes a level of competition from their heads. If one of them is the starter, then they'll play like one. Patrick Roy. Ed Belfour. Curtis Joseph. But if they don't know if they're #1 or #2, then - they'll inadvertently play like that. Glen Healey. Trevor Kidd. Scott Clemmensen. They knew they were #2 guys, they knew their spot. Riemer/Bernier: if they win, ok, if not, ok as well - they'll drop to #2. They NEED to know where they're at so they can play like it. They're both good guys, at least give them the decency to officially designate them. Deal with it, make the decisions, and stamp it.

I agree with most of what you're saying here, especially the stuff about internet culture but that's a long and complicated topic that there really isn't much point in discussing (on this forum anyways). I will say however that Babcock DID name Bernier the starter prior to the season, he even said Bernier would play 60+ games. Bernier was the one that crapped the bed and gave Reimer the opportunity to take the starter role. If he had put up even average numbers the first ten games, there would be 0 debate as to who's starter, in management's view anyways.
