Picking a fight
possibly. seems like one of those deals where they fully intend to trade his cap hit if needed.

Clarkson, Phaneuf, Lupul, Robidas, Horton.... the leafs are pretty good at making bad cap hits go away

Ok maybe they'll trade him but the guy I quoted said his contract expires before their contracts kick in, which is flagrantly wrong no matter what way you try to spin it.

The Leafs were never going to be able to afford Tavares with or without Marleau. Tavares will/would demand top dollar on a contract with term. This one year contract stuff is ridiculous.

just for a push at the cup.

RNH + 2018 first + Caleb Jones

For Tavares

Oilers would not resign Tavares unless he is willing to take around 8 million.
Maroon would have to walk, faynes cap would be gone and so would Nuges.
Oilers would then enter the cycles of using cheap wingers to cycle through the roster.
Once nurse is ready to step up, trade sekera and yeah

Tavares is only going if Draisaitl + is coming back from Edmonton. And that's a big + after Draisaitl especially if the Tavares did a sign and trade for some reason. Completely unrealistic trade here

One year of Tavares isn't going to fetch very much. Remember what Kovulchuk went for,

At least buy New York a drink first...

For one year of Tavares you'd be lucky to get RNH.

Don't know how you justify that response to Isles fans. Give up their franchise centre for a high #3C low #2C and tell them they're ''lucky''.

Tavares isn't a rental player. Whatever team he is traded to/if he is traded to will sign him long term, otherwise theres no point in wasting a massive amount of assets for him just as a rental considering the price would be sky high.

Thank you

I was going to look up examples of pending UFAs to show the lack of return Tavares would garner if he was traded this upcoming season.

Well, if the Islanders know Tavares is going to walk... that's not a bad return for the trade deadline. The key factor in all of this is whether or not Tavares is for sure leaving NY next summer. If so, then this is a solid package, if not, then the Islanders hang up on every offer.

Of course is just a hypothetical so I'll just take it at that.

If there was a desperate push by ownership and management for a cup I think this would be a fair value trade. But only if the Islanders knew JT was walking at the end of the year. It would be a big price to pay for one full year of a player, but Tavares would be worth it.

Would I do this trade? Nah

There's way too much value in all three Oilers assets there to justify a one year push. Not worth mortgaging the future for.

As for JT resigning in Edmonton, or a sign and trade, I don't see it happening. Don't think Tavares wants to play #2 C.

Forgetting completely about whether NYI would do this or if the value is fair, if Edmonton isn't going to resign him, why are they giving up RNH, a 2018 1st and C.Jones for 1 season of Tavares? Even if that's a fair price (not touching on that), why would Edmonton pay that price for 1 year of a very good player? They can get a decent return for RNH should they trade him... moving him for a rental - let alone adding to him would be disastrous for Edmonton.

Do you really look at Edmonton as a team and see a team that's 1 player away from a Stanley Cup? Or so close to a cup that they can afford to make a move like this?

Kovalchuk had a more accomplished pedigree when he was traded

In what sense? Sure he was a high scoring offensive winger... but one Rocket Richard trophy 5 years prior to him getting traded (and one of the lower scoring Rockets to boot) doesn't mean all that much. Because as individual players... JT is a much better player, more well rounded, younger and plays a more important position.

LOL let use a trade a century ago rather than current trades? Martin hanzal went for a 1st 2nd and 4th round pick. Let's say jones is worth a 2nd. So you're telling me the difference in value between john Tavares and Martin hanzal is nuge?
