Value of: John Tavares at 56 million over 4 years. Which teams can afford that?

Tavares will most likely take a 7yr deal over a 4yr deal. Its called job security. All it takes is one hit to turn into a Nathan Horton. Why risk it with a short contract when you can get more money long term. Call it insurance against injury or whatever.

UFA's who take short deals almost always end up getting screwed (bad season, injury, etc) whereas those who sign long term make out like bandits even when they suck or get injured (there's a long list of those).

Tavares will not sign 4 years and just hope to still be good and healthy at age 32. It's so dumb to even consider it a possibility that any agent who'd allow him to do that should lose his certification.

If Tavares signs for 4 years, it does make sense with the Habs. He is there with Price and Weber and they try for a cup before Weber turns 36. Then he negotiates a new contract with a higher salary cap in his early 30’s. $56M over 4 years is not leaving money on the table!

New Jersey can afford this, plus they can offer him being Taylor Hall's center for the next 7 years.
this is the only situation i'm actually concerned about. Jersey offers a similar life style as long island and a playoff ready team. Crazy scenario, he could sign a 3 yr deal with Jersey hopefully win a cup and then sign with the Islanders when they move to Belmont and have collected a couple top picks and barzal has fully developed.
