Scott Wheeler just did a 2020 redraft.. He slotted JJ at number 15 overall.

Actual draft pick: No. 34 (change: +19) to Buffalo
My final ranking: No. 43 (change: +28)​

Peterka has progressed really well since the draft. There was the 10 goals and 21 points in 32 regular-season and playoff games in the DEL in his post-draft. There was 80 points in 80 regular-season and playoff games as a rookie in the AHL. And then there was last year, establishing himself as an NHL regular in his second season in North America. His hardworking, driven game was always going to fit well on the smaller ice surface. When all is said and done, he’s going to be exactly the kind of player you hope to find in the second round: an up-and-down-the-lineup contributor who can produce but also gives you more than the numbers in his utility.​

For completeness, he slotted Jack Quinn at number 10 and was very complimentary in his right up. That's 2 lower than where Buffalo took him, but still 5 over where Wheeler had projected him (15). Devon Levi was redrafted at 13. That's up 199 from where he was taken by Florida. Wheeler did not rank him for the 2020 draft.

It will be interesting to see how Paterka advances and in what role as he moves along. He flashed some ability last season but I'm not sure he had a real identity to his game yet. He could be a do-everything sort of player but you like to see a guy develop into top 5 forechecker, 200' foot player... Some sort of specialist.

He is excellent on the boards. Just needs some weight and consistency which should come naturally over time. Tuch lite?

He was a beast at the World Championships. I'm hoping that's a springboard for him like it was for Cozens last year.

I was hoping both him and Quinn would take big jumps this year. Now that Quinn will miss at least the first half of this season, JJ is going to have even more opportunity to go off this year.

He's such a strong skater, and he can make plays at top speed as well. His potential is enticing as hell. I have trouble gauging exactly where his realistic potential lies (top-6 forward vs top-line forward). Definitely seems like he'll atleast be a good top-9 forward.

Analysis: Peterka had a successful first NHL season, scoring 32 points and looking like he belonged. Peterka is full of speed and skill, and coming down the wing he can beat a lot of NHL defenders. He can make tough passes and do so with pace. His shot is excellent, as he’s a threat to score from range constantly and often tries to score from bad angles. Peterka isn’t that big, but his compete is solid and with his speed, he can be a quality top-six wing.

Peterka feels slept on now. He can get to 50-60 this year if he can be consistent. Similar with Quinn, scaled back with games missed. Right now we kind of need these two to make a jump. If they don't build on last season our other wingers are Greenway and VO....yuck.

Mitts is a center to me until he isn't.

Nice interview. Everybody on this team who speaks seems to really reinforce what seems to be a really tight bond amongst the guys. For whatever reason, I wondered about Peterka. He's a great kid.

JJ Peterka, Buffalo Sabres
JJ Peterka will be a critical top-six contributor for the Sabres, playing on Dylan Cozens’ line. He should see a decent bump from the 13:39 he averaged per game last season, especially because of Jack Quinn’s injury.

Peterka had a solid rookie campaign, contributing 32 points in 77 games, and 27 of those 32 points came at five-on-five, which is an encouraging trend. Peterka’s speed made him a constant threat off the rush. He has the high-end puck skills and sharp passing ability to make difficult plays in high traffic.

He drove play really well as a rookie and would have had more bottom-line production if he had finished his chances a bit better. Peterka was an impressive shooter coming up as a prospect, so we should see improvement in that regard. In fact, he’s already showing positive signs on that front, as he exploded for seven goals and 12 points in 10 games for Germany at the World Championship this summer.
