I think we all kinda predicted and saw this coming...he's back with Francis who he probably had a great working relationship from over the years, and he gets to start FRESH with a new franchise

The thing about this is that I think, at least fundamentally, Dundon's 100% right about Forslund not being necessary to TV ratings, but ONLY if we're a winning franchise going forward for the next decade. Without that, he may as well be risking a lot of goodwill with the old fanbase, so he better hope that he hires the right folks in hockey operations to use his open checkbook on the roster wisely!
I mean unless he deems Tulsky too expensive to retain and also goes full Karmanos 'spend to the floor, not the cap', then I think we are in good hands as far as being competitive down the line.

Thing is, it was a luxury to have Kaiton and Forslund. I'm sad he's going to be the main guy of another franchise, but if Seattle gave into the demands he was asking of us, and what caused Tampa to balk at bringing him on (being that he wants leverage to work a hefty chunk of NBC games, regardless of whether or not they impact the local team) then I'm ok with Maniscalco for 82 games over Forslund for 75 and Chakya for 7.

Glad he found a landing spot again.

This. I had accepted he wasn't coming back given the lowball offer, so I'm happy Forslund will be working nightly again and not just on occasion if he hooks on with someone for the next national contract(s?)

Still hurts he's gone, but I've enjoyed hearing him on national games so far and I'm glad he'll be doing some local games.

He passed on Tampa per The Athletic. Jeff Rimer was just on Sirius NHL with Boomer - close friend of JF - said it's been in the works for a while. Gotta be nice to have an org budget and foresight for such top shelf hires.

The consensus commentary is that it is such a shortsighted and dumb move by the Canes to toss away a true ambassador of the sport. Just brings on more of the ever present Canes so poor narrative, too.

I would imagine a team that hasn't had to pay a payroll to actual players during the pandemic might have an easier time paying that off ice talent right now. The Canes did what made sense for them.

Because Tom Dundon looked at the economics of it and decided that what John Forslund brought from a revenue standpoint didn't exceed what Tom Dundon had to pay him. Figured viewership wouldn't suffer without Forslund so he went with a cheaper option. Not saying Tom Dundon is right or wrong on this, but that's why.

Yep. And it may be the right decision, we don't know the numbers and specifics. But it's also possible he miscalculated what it was worth to keep the fanbase happy by keeping John. If the team is good on the ice it likely won't matter, but what about when the team isn't good? Things like this could keep adding up and have an effect when the team inevitably has some rough stretches. Good for John for getting the Seattle job, I'll definitely miss him but it is what it is. Excited to see Mike develop in this opportunity.

I don't think Dundon saved enough money to make it worth the price he's going to pay for losing Forslund. That difference is chump change for a billionaire.

He doesn't strike me a guy who cares if people criticize him on the internet.

I do worry about this hardline negotiating tactic we've seen in different areas of the organization get in the way of what has the potential to be something special. Not everyone is replaceable if he/she wants more money than what Dundon thinks the person is worth.

I feel good for him. He's going to be in a national spotlight almost constantly this season, which is a nice step toward that NBC gig that we all know he'll get eventually. And he'll be a cult figure for another fanbase which, much like ours, will always hear his voice behind their fond memories of the early days.

To me the split between Forslund and the Canes really wasn't all that painful. John reached the peak of his profession and wanted to be paid accordingly, with opportunities to grow into a well-earned national role. Dundon was staring down the barrel of a season with little-to-no revenue, and the economic reality that there's no real bottom-line difference between an A-level announcer and a C-level announcer as far as a regional broadcast is concerned. It was pretty clearly a situation where both needed to move on. And it's not like Maniscalco is some basketball guy that they found wandering the Bojangles parking lot. He's a big part of Canes culture too... believe it or not, he'll soon have logged 15 years covering this team. The change is fine, and it was coming sooner or later in some form.

So by my account. MacDonald (scout), Kron (scout), Olcyck (AGM), Dawson (scout), and Forslund have all joined Francis in Seattle. Anyone else I forgot?
On SiriusNHL - on The Power Play..Kouleas just said there are some rumblings about our coach being targeted as well due to our lowballing. Dave Pagnotta would not confirm and said they aren't going to hire until the end of this season. Kouleas seemed to be getting fed by someone.

This so much. People will stick around if the team is winning but the lean times will come, and they need to build a cache of goodwill before they do. Heck its hard to even watch old canes highlights, something I do with embarrassing regularity, because John is so woven into that experience.
Imagine the kraken actually taking Tripp...
If tripp goes I may have a personal crisis

We'll see on Brindy. He's been open about not wanting to coach elsewhere and many of the more reliable pundits have said they think we get a deal done with Brindy. Certainly, all that could change, but I'm not buying it at this point. I also feel like Brindy is one of the guys that Dundon has made no bones about knowing how important he is. That doesn't mean it won't be a difficult negotiation as it has been under Dundon, but I'd imagine it gets done as of this point in time. That info being fed could be similar to the tactic of Don interviewing with the Wild to finally get what he needed.

I may be alone here but I don't think Mike is that good, compared to most of the other PBP guys around the league. I would feel better about this if we didn't have an inexperienced guy to replace one of the best there is.

Forslund was the only reason I was ok with letting Kaiton go. I understood the idea of saving money by having one outstanding announcer instead of 2 and reducing the cost of the broadcasts, but there are little things that distinguish a radio broadcast from TV. I never got the feeling I lost something hearing John on the radio. I can't say that for most TV simulcasts.
