Read a rumour (not reliable source) saying we have offer of Sutter, Pouliot, 1st for Kesler. That return would make me sick to my stomach. Kesler isn't exactly getting better. And we need pouliot since he's out only legit PP wizard in the while organisation.

Wasn't that what Vancouver demanded at the trade deadline that Shero refused? I hope they dont do that deal. Makes us older, trading away future. Would Kesler play center/wing here?

The latest rumor from Dreger is that the Kesler sweeps are down to Chicago and Anaheim and the Pens aren't involved.

Don't think you need to worry about that trade which would indeed be a bad deal.

Maybe you find that experience with the assistants. Johnston was an assistant coach for Team Canada at the '98 Olympics. It's not the same as being the head coach, but he does have experience coaching the best player in the history of the game in some capacity. Granted the team didn't do as well as expected

To be honest though, I don't think Sid and Geno are going to give the new guy (no matter who it is) a hard time at all. They want to win more than anything.

Was Johnston the one who told Crawford, "yeah, that Gretzky guy has no hands, leave him off the shootout list, Crow"?

I like the Johnston potential hire myself. It's scary in some way, but I like new people getting a shot at the highest level.

Wilson would be scary because I would be concerned about punching walls on a nightly basis and pulling my hair out in frustration. I despise his condescending ways so much. I couldn't root for him to succeed. He's such an ass.

I hope we can move on from this. To me this never made any sense.

Johnston - HC
Tocchet - Fwds & PP
? - Defense
? - PK
Bales - Goaltending

I don't see Granato coming back. I would say Martin either, but there aren't many coaching openings around maybe he stays?

It most certainly did. The past GM & Coach had their jobs on the line to produce in the playoffs or else. Kesler made perfect sense at the time.;)

Rutherford did not dispute that the Penguins' next coach might not be the only one who has input on the makeup of his staff.

"We have to see first who the new person is and what his needs are and what direction he wants to go," he said. "Then, he and I will work together."

JR basically admitting he will have a big say as far as assistant coaches, which is a bad move IMO, let the coach pick his own staff.
Maybe they fear another Bylsma. They let him pick his assistants and they never could get a bad cop on that staff. The most DB would ever agree to was allowing the higher ups to bring in Jacques Martin and even he was a players coach.

PIT and Portland GM-coach Mike Johnston are finalizing a deal that will make him Pens' next head coach. Not quite done yet but expected.

It's kind of pathetic that Carolina, Florida and Vancouver landed coaches and our old GM is still searching.

Looks like it's gonna be Johnston then.
I think i'm ok with this. I'll wait to see how they fill out the staff.

And there it is. The cheater as coach. The bookie as associate coach. What do they conquer first? The NHL . . . or The Rivers Casino? :sarcasm:

With that sort of logic, should have kept Bylsma. Then we'd have had a coach all along!

Not saying Johnston is/isn't the perfect fit, but basing it on the timing in comparison to other, failing organizations, probably isn't the best method for determining that.

I like the fact that he was implicated in a cheating scandal. Perhaps he could bring a Belicheckian element to the club.

I've been out of the loop lately, so my only comment is that I'm happy that he coaches a style of play that I want to see played and it's not a retread hire. I'm excited to see some real change and I hope we get it.

:phew: That was close! Hiring Ron Wilson or Tom Renney would have made this offseason a complete Joke!! At least now I can hope for some improvement over the Shero & Bylsma buddy buddy side show that I've had to endure for 5 years.:)

I hope he adjusts the defense optional approach from Portland. :sarcasm:
