What crap does he get?

Plenty. This contract is only going to amplify that. Just read the first page of this thread.

I'm gonna rehash what I said on the main trade board because he was taking just as much flak there.

Yeah, the term is maybe a year longer than I would have liked. Yeah, maybe he's overpaid by 500k. Pretty minor stuff compared to other things around the league. This would rank Howard 10th among caphits for goalies, not including guys like Rask and Bob due for even bigger raises this offseason. He's may be a middle of the pack starter overall, but he's getting paid like it.

These same people ripped Anaheim for locking up Perry and Getzlaf to, imho, pretty standard contracts. As a Detroit fan, I'm happy about this deal. It's not ideal but it's fair.

Also, comparing this to Luongo's contract is hilarious considering that deal takes him to age 50 or whatever. Howard will still be a serviceable goalie by the end of his deal, and if Mrazek is able to live up to his potential, this deal doesn't make Howard 'untradeable'.. I wouldn't be surprised by an NTC/NMC though. Holland hands 'em out like candy on Halloween. That may hurt in the long run.

Didn't he one year have like

Lidstrom(not far off prime)-Rafalski
Stuart-Kronwall
Ericsson-X(can't remember who it was)

The first year he was our playoff starter was 2010.

Lidstrom was 40, but that's another argument.

So we're clear here, what is your idea of playoff success? Winning a Cup?

Which other NHL team is so desperately looking for a goaltender that they might give Howard such a contract? I cannot think of any and therefore would disapprove of that signing.

Ok, I'll bite. Which team that he's had in front of him was good enough for him to prove anything?

that can be said about a lot of goalies, no?

price has never played for a good team, till now, and he is hands down amazing and probably top 3 goalie in the league

lundqvist for years played for an average at best team and yet he proved he was awesome

rinne has always played for just nashville who have never ever been good enough to get past the second round, no worse then detroit

miller and his buffalo sabares are not nor have not ever been a very good team since he has been there(maybe one season?)

not sure top goalies only get that way when and if the teams they play for are top 4 teams in the league/playoffs..

People don't like the deal, but guess what? That's the going rate for an NHL starting goalie.

And yet Howard has had about as much playoff success as any of those guys.

all i meant was that i dont think goalies get their reputation nor success strictly from the teams in front of them and that is all

I'm fine with this deal. I think Howard is in the 8-12 range for goalies in this league but on an giving day he could be as high as 5 or as low as 16 or 17. Goaltending is so close in this league now that any goalie on any given day could find themselves in tier 2 of goalies.

Tier 1 (goalies better then Howard)

Lundqvist (Makes more, has to be re-signed next year)
Quick (Got a lifetime deal at 5.8M per)
Rinne (7M cap hit)
Rask (RFA after this year)

Tier 2 (Slitghly better then Howard)

Anderson (On and off again, very hot right now)
Lehtonen (5.9M cap hit)
Price (6.5M Cap hit, Has played on some poor teams, I think he's a tad overrated but he's still young)

Tier 3 (Equal to Howard)

Howard (possibly 5.3M)
Schneider (RFA, 4M, only been a starter for 1 year)
Fleury (5M, signed deal when cap was lower)

Howard has started the 8th most games, has the 8th best even strength sv% (a goalie must have started at least 20 games) and has faced the 9th most shots, the only reason his total sv% is so low is because his PP sv% is well below his career average this season. His career average for PP sv% is .890, if he had that this year his sv% would be .922. While not an earth shattering number it moves him into the top 6 for total sv%.

As for the term I'd rather have him then not have him and there's nothing wrong with having 2 #1 goalies. Mrazek is still going to be in the AHL for at least another 2 years, after which I'd say he'll be the backup in 3 years time, that means for years 4,5 & 6 we ride the hot hand. Mrazek played well in his call up but I don't want to roll with him just yet, and if he does prove himself it won't be hard to move Howard.

Edit: I don't want to include Officer Bobrovosky until at least next season. It's the same reason why Anderson isn't an Elite goalie yet. The thing that separates goalies in this league is consistency and if either of them can do just as well next year, or close to it, I'll have no problem adding them in where it's appropriate.

Since Mrazek is coming along so fast, I just hope there isn't a NTC so that we aren't stuck if he should boom.

I'm thinking the same thing. I'm guessing Mrazek is ready in 3 years, one more in the AHL, one year backup to Howard and the next year, we're looking at 1A and 1B.

Agreed, with all points. His numbers this year are behind a pretty terribad defense and he's still looking good.

I wish sarcasto still had the standing for the post-game 3 stars after every match last year. Pretty sure most of you voted for Howard pretty consistently, and he was easily top 2-3 of our most valuables last year (possibly this year also).

By the way guys, having 2 goalies capable of starting (Howard/Mrazek) isn't a bad thing. Competition will be good for them, Mrazek won't be hitting UFA before Howard's deal runs out. Like D2Z said, Howard's deal won't make him untradeable like Luongo considering his contract doesn't run until he gets his AARP card.

A NMC could hurt, we'll see if Holland gave him one.

Again, no one has said he's an elite starting goalie. But he's not getting paid like one. Have some perspective, people.

If it was more like $5 million or less a year, I'd be more pleased with the deal but he's a guy I feel comfortable with for the long term. The goalies I'd consider to be better aren't going to be available without trading valuable assets or overspending in free agency (see Mike Smith). Howard is a good fit for this team.

I hope this will be a deal where the price looks not as good now but he'll play his way into being a $5+ million goalie. I think he'll be there soon. With no more backdiving deals, you can't manipulate the cap numbers like before. $5 million is probably the low price for most top end starters. Considering this team doesn't have a Hall of Fame defense, you can't get away with having older and cheaper goaltending. For once, goaltending is less of a concern for this team than the blue line.

Too much money and too long a term for Howard...but Holland may not have many options here.

Also, the only way Howard will sign this deal is if Holland includes a NTC...or else Howard may test the free agent market. May have another Luongo situation is a few years.

I like this contract. Howard is better than y'all give him credit for, he's the biggest reason we are in a playoff spot. And to those who say he is unproven in the playoffs, remember when we said the same things about Datysuk before 2007?
