Because it seems like Skinner won't re-sign and Carolina wants something rather than lose him for nothing by not trading him to the teams he would rather go to. In this scenario, it will suck for his return but it's better to get a return on him than to lose him for absolutely nothing.

What would you rather have? Say screw you and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Or get something for someone that doesn't want to be there anymore in a tough situation where he dictates where he goes?

I'm not sure about that, it depends on where he'd play. I'm not sure how well he'd fit with Malkin and he probably won't supplant Guentzel with Crosby.

Nate Thompson has a modified NTC for some reason, so I'm surprised more players of any sort don't have all these clauses.
